The Greens join today's motorcycle and scooter levy protest
03-10-2006 The $53.20 levy imposed on the state's motorcyclists and scooter riders in this year's Victorian budget will do little for motorcycle and scooter safety - and even less for the environment, say the Greens.
"At a time when we should be encouraging as many people as possible to use energy efficient transport, this levy sends the wrong message," said Bill Pemberton, the Greens Transport spokesperson.
Bill Pemberton will address the protest rally of massed riders at parliament House to start at 1.00pm this afternoon (Tuesday October 3, 2006).
"Motorcycle accidents are a serious issue and every motorcyclist or scooter rider killed is a tragedy," said Bill Pemberton. "However, this levy is unlikely to save one biker life."
"The continuing installation of 'egg-slicer' wire barriers along roadsides is a major concern," said Bill Pemberton. "This must stop while a more motorcycle-friendly barrier is developed."
"The levy is unnecessary. Worse still, it will add yet another financial barrier to people wanting to move to environmentally friendly transport," said Bil Pemberton. "Motorcycle safety should be treated in the same way car, truck and pedestrian safety is approached - and should be funded in the same way."
"What will the government think of next - a motorised wheelchair levy to fund another safety study?" asked Bill Pemberton.
