Attempted Suicide in Baxter Detention Centre

06-08-2006 The Victorian Greens Spokesperson on Refugees today said that the attempted suicide of a detainee in Baxter detention centre confirmed the worst fears of himself and other refugee advocates.

“The detainee was one of six who were returned to detention from the Glenside Psychiatric institution several months ago, against their will and against the advice of their treating doctors. At the time the treating doctors and advocates feared their return to the demoralising conditions of Baxter would have serious consequences. It is tragic to see our fears being confirmed in this manner.”

Mr. Job explained that the detainee has been in detention almost two years. He was found by other detainees at about 7.00 pm this evening (Sunday) and is presently in Port Augusta hospital.

“When I visited him and other detainees in Glenside in January this year they all appeared on the road to recovery. While they continued to be depressed about their uncertain futures, they all told me the conditions in Glenside were vastly better than those of Baxter, and this had led to their improved spirits.”

Mr. Job also noted that of the six returned only one had since been released into the community, despite government commitment to release long term detainees.

“That DIMA would return individuals at risk against the advice of their treating doctors so long after the Palmer Report is an indication of the contempt in which they hold asylum seekers, and their disdain for the very concept of human rights.
“Above all this proves that mandatory long term detention has failed. It is simply not possible to detain people for the lengths of time they continue to held without causing long term damage to the wellbeing, and seriously damaging their human rights.”
