Category Descriptions

  


Agriculture:
The agricultural inductee must have ties to the agricultural industry either through their own personal farm/ranch or through agriculturally related service organization. This may also include those individuals who promote or supply the agricultural industry through their business. Inductees have either made a living through the Agricultural industry or contributed to the development and promotion of the agricultural industry in South Dakota and beyond. As agriculture is the largest industry in South Dakota, inductees should be recognized by peers as agricultural leaders, innovators, and role models for their peers. Their contributions to the overall welfare of the industry are strongly considered.

Arts & Humanities:
Individuals inducted into the Arts and Humanities category come from a broad spectrum of fields and professions. This category contains, but is not limited to: artists, painters, performers, musicians and craftsman. Individuals are recognized for their contributions to the Arts and Humanities through their trade. Due to the ever-increasing mediums of the performing arts and artistic interpretations, this category is not limited to only traditional performance arts. Those inducted are looked upon as a leader in their medium of art.

Athletics:
Individuals inducted into the Athletics category have either excelled at their sport of choice or have made a sizable contribution to the promotion and development of the sporting world. Those selected for induction have achieved a high standard of excellence in their sport of choice at either a local, state or national level. Individuals may also be inducted for their work in the sporting profession such as coaches, manager, general managers, owners and officials.

Business & Trade:
Due to the ever-increasing world of Business the category of Business & Trades is a very eclectic category encompassing vast business leaders. Individuals do not need to own a company, but must make a sizeable contribution to the growth and prosperity of the business. This category is not limited to more traditional businesses but may also encompass individuals who have become innovators in their field and made a sizeable contribution in the means and manner of delivery of a product. Inductees are also looked upon for their contributions to the development of the state through more than just profession but also through their civic and social service in their community/state.

Communications:
Individuals in this category are looked upon as a leader in the communication field and have made a career from informing and entertaining others through their trade. This may include through work in the newspaper industry, magazine industry, radio, television and also computer and internet industry. They may include a radio announcer, television news reporter, newspaper reporter/editor or owner of any such business that assists entertainment or news being relayed.

Education & Cultural Affairs:
They have made a lifelong commitment to the development of South Dakota/nations youth and adult learners. They may include, but are not limited to a one-room schoolteacher, teachers, college professors, superintendents, principals or members of the Board of Regents. Through either their work or service they have dedicated themselves to the enrichment of mankind through education. They are often times looked upon as either pioneers or leaders in the education field. Many have implemented new and innovative educational techniques.

Governmental Affairs:
They have served the nation/state through social/political service as either a state/national legislator, governor, or city/county commissioner. Inductees may have also reached political/governmental levels above state/local representation, such as work with the national government. Through their service they have shown a dedicated concern for the welfare of the nation/state. They have shown a dedication to the preservation of Democracy and service to the people of the state/nation that they represent.

Indian Heritage:
Individuals inducted into this category should be dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the Native American Culture/History. Inductees should have achieved a rank or level among the tribal leaders. The inductee should be dedicated to the education of Indians and non-Indians toward the need for cultural harmony. The individual must have a level of Native American Heritage to be considered for induction in this category.

Historical:
Inductees in this category have dedicated one’s lifetime career to the field of history or historical education. Individuals who have shown a significant involvement in historical preservation activities, projects, or research and may have statewide and/or national recognition are also included in this category. The inductee may also be in this category if they have uncovered historical incident(s), artifact(s), or site(s) whose discovery has been documented by an independent source. Also one may have used writing or other alternative formats to describe a significant historical event(s).

Military Affairs:
Individuals must have received recognition or rank for exemplary service in a branch of the United States Armed Services. Service may be active or non-active duty. One should have made a sizeable contribution to the welfare of the military service. The Inductee should be committed to the service and welfare of the United States of America and looked upon as a role-model/leader amongst their peers.

Professional:
This category includes those individuals in professions such as doctors, lawyers, nurses, veterinarians, and professionals who through their trade have provided a service to mankind. They have used their education & profession for the enhancement of society and have been successful in their chosen field, which does not necessarily mean financial. They may have reached new levels or made advancements in a chosen field and are looked upon as an innovator, pioneer or leader.

Professional Cowboy:
Individuals who have made a career through their participation in the sport of Rodeo, and are not limited to being a bull, bronc, or bareback rider. Inductees may also include, but are not limited to, breeders of rodeo stock, bullfighter, rodeo promoters, and announcers. They have reached a high level of competition in their given trade at either a local, state, or national level. One is looked upon as a top athlete in their field of competition.

Religion:
Inductees throughout their lives have made a commitment to the service of the religion. Denomination is not a factor, rather their service to the welfare of mankind. Inductees may include any level of Religious/church affiliation from priest, minister, pastor, nun, etc. They have taken a vow to serve and spread the word and meaning of religion.

Transportation:
Individuals have played an integral role in the development, upkeep, and future planning of the state/local or national transportation systems. Through their profession or service they have made an impact on the manner in which transportation is guided. Inductees may come from a broad spectrum of professionals such as a Department of Transportation employee, railroad worker, steamboat operator, etc.

Unsung Heroes & Good Hearts:
These individuals are considered to have made a lifelong commitment to their communities, people or service organizations with little or no fan fare. They have gone above and beyond the call of duty to provide services to those whom may or may not be able to provide for themselves. One has acted out of the goodness of their hearts rather than for personal gain. They are looked upon in their community, service organization as a positive role model and inspiration for mankind. They continually think of others well being before their own.
