The Coast Guard Hut At Long Nab The Scalby Nabs Ornithological Group was quickly formed in 1993 when the coastguard hut guard became vacant. It is ideally situated with a fantastic view of the sea for at least 180 degrees at an optimum height of just over 100 feet. This lookout, built in 1927,was one of several along the Yorkshire coast which were regularly manned in bad weather. During World War 11 Long Nab was manned 24 hours a day by two coastguards. A bomb shelter was built during The 1939-45 war to offer some protection in the event of enemy action In 1993 the lookout was taken over by The Scalby Nabs Ornithological Group. It
is now used as a bird watching station
to study coastal migration. Because of this base members have been attracted from all over the country and regularly visit, to either Sea watch,
or to comb
the surrounding cliff paths or
bushes enjoying a walk along the Yorkshire coast, with some of the the best
Sea watching north of Scarborough.
