Biography
Commissioner Lawrence
Weekly is a model for today’s urban youth, overcoming many odds to become
an
anomaly of the social system and a hero to local residents.
Born in Reno, Nevada, Weekly moved with his family to Las Vegas at the
tender age of four; the youngest of four children, he was raised by a single
mother who worked hard to provide for her family.
After much hard work and perseverance, his mother was able to move her
family out of government-subsidized housing into a working class neighborhood in
West Las Vegas. After
graduating from Western High School in 1982, Lawrence attended Clark County
Community College, later transferring to Grambling State University in
Louisiana, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication in 1987.
He returned to Las Vegas, pursuing careers in radio broadcasting and
education. In
1995, he joined the City of Las Vegas’ Neighborhood Services department as a
management analyst. There he was
responsible for neighborhood outreach efforts and large community cleanups.
In 1998, he was chosen to serve as community liaison for Las Vegas
Councilman Gary Reese. He worked as
Councilman Reese’s liaison until December 31, 1999, when he was appointed by
the Las Vegas City Council to represent the newly created Ward 5. Commissioner
Weekly was appointed to office by Governor Jim Gibbons and was sworn into office
on March 6, 2007. The term will
expire the first Monday in January 2009. Lawrence
