US Warned of Glasgow Threat Two Weeks Ago

June 30, 2007 4:37 PM

Richard Esposito and Rhonda Schwartz Report:

Police_glasgow_main U.S. law enforcement officials received intelligence reports two weeks ago warning of a possible terror attack in Glasgow against "airport infrastructure or aircraft," a senior US law enforcement official tells the Blotter on ABCNews.com.

The intelligence reports also warned that airports and aircraft in the Czech Republic could be the targets of  al Qaeda-connected terrorists.

The warnings were kept secret for operational reasons, according to officials.  In public, the White House and Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff have continued to maintain they know of no specific or credible threats involving the United States, even though the intelligence reports specify US aircraft as possible targets.

A US official told ABCNews.com that the intelligence reports led to the assignment of Federal Air Marshals to flights into and out of both Glasgow and Prague.

Air marshals had been added to flights into and out of Germany late last month, based on similar warnings.

I would be more impressed if you told me of a threat two weeks from now that came true.

Posted by: Kevin Good | Jun 30, 2007 4:53:24 PM

Was this information shared with the uk?!

Posted by: Steve | Jun 30, 2007 4:53:47 PM

Idiots. No matter what their cause is, they are idiots.

Posted by: Jose | Jun 30, 2007 5:01:28 PM

Two weeks ago?
Fat lot of good that did anyone.
If there had been a properly constructed bomb in the vehicle at Glasgow, it doesn't appear anything was put in place to stop it!

Posted by: gotcha | Jun 30, 2007 5:33:49 PM

I live in Glasgow, Scotland, and can't believe that terror is on my doorstep. I would be livid if it was true that U.S. officials knew of an attack before it took place and none of the appropriate authorities were notified. I know that Glasgow isn't as well known as London or Edinburgh across the globe, but we still count as life and like everyone else, are now under threat from terrorists!

Posted by: Gordon | Jun 30, 2007 6:21:38 PM

this is shocking if glasgow airport was warned then there is no sign of increased security.
brian from glasgow.

Poor fly by media. If the US would have done something two weeks ago, then ABC would report negatively. Now that the event happened it's somehow spun to be our fault, no matter what! Thanks Al-Qaeda Broadcasting Company, you are great! This coming from a news organization that calls terroists freedom fighters and only reports half the story.

Posted by: AmericasNumberOne | Jun 30, 2007 6:28:17 PM

What Gotcha says is true. Although vehicles are forbidden to stop directly outside the airport, there's nothing to stop one crossing the central reservation. Which is exactly what this one did.

Posted by: Arktos | Jun 30, 2007 6:31:32 PM

Typical American nonsense. God help us all.

Posted by: Captain Brittles | Jun 30, 2007 6:36:36 PM

Clearly they didn't know anything or more would have been done.

Here is some intelligence for you, there will be another attack in the UK, no idea when or were but there will, I suspect this is as useful as most of the intelligence going round.

Posted by: Aye Right | Jun 30, 2007 6:37:53 PM

Since I started watching "Future Weapons"
on the Military Channel I havent worried too much about an idiot in a Jeep Cherokee
with a can of gasoline in the back seat, especially with supporters who want to ride "shotgun" in a suicide bombing.
One day we will have had enough of this crap and it will be ended very quickly.

Posted by: David | Jun 30, 2007 6:39:33 PM

I would love to see the source this came from. With all MSM, you can't trust and a blogger from the left as well. So you need a physical source otherwise you can't believe it.

Posted by: Sandi Saileau | Jun 30, 2007 6:41:08 PM

Are you making up news again? I remember Mr. realiable Brian Ross going on the Charlie Rose Show claiming that "according to a senior Virginia law enforcement official", that the Virginia Tech. massacre was the result of a jilted ex-boyfriend seeking revenge on potential potential suitors.

Posted by: duh | Jun 30, 2007 6:42:47 PM

The cowards, make the world a safer place , kill a terrorist!

Posted by: kim clift RN | Jun 30, 2007 6:43:58 PM

Short of constructing a brick wall outside the main entrance, what could they have possibly done to stop a couple of mentalists driving a Jeep into the front door?

Posted by: Gav | Jun 30, 2007 6:45:27 PM

The Chief of Police in Glasgow has confirmed that they knew nothing of any planned attack on their Airports in Glasgow. So are US officials keeping all the cards to thier chest, I thought we were on the same side!

Posted by: Phil | Jun 30, 2007 6:48:19 PM

Lets stop being so dam politically correct and round these losers up and execute them. These animals have no qualms killing us and our children, preemptive stike kill a terrorist!

ABC is probably not telling the truth. Identify who told you!

Posted by: Jack Tripper | Jun 30, 2007 6:52:59 PM

No it wasn't. If this is true then this Paisley resident (1.5 miles from the airport) thanks the US for not sharing information about a threat that could have cost many lives.
Thanks a bunch guys! So much for the "special" relationship.

Posted by: James Bannon | Jun 30, 2007 6:56:12 PM

also watch out for rockets attacks on airplanes landing and taking at lax, they're easy pickings.

Posted by: AC | Jun 30, 2007 7:04:33 PM

Apparently there was SOME security at the terminalbeing all vigilant...one police constable.

Yeah so much for the special relationship, Bush is a prat who has, with his cronies, created a self-fulfiling prophecy of terror in Iraq and made the world such a paranoid, Orwellian 'Brave New World'

Posted by: Terrasidius | Jun 30, 2007 7:43:40 PM

A; I dont hold this report in much regard. I dont even know who the authors are..

B; If its true then based on the relationship between American and British intelligence agencies IT WAS SHARED

More media sensationalism geard to get a reaction from the masses to stir the pot in one direction or another. It's all blurbs of someones conversation twisted with their convienent interpretation, designed to up the ratings and your anger. Ignore it.

this is trash journalism.
to quote this blog " a senior US law enforcement officials tells the Blotter on ABCNews.com."
since when do you use "a" with "officials".
so did one person feed you this story and you published without a second confirming? or did a group of officials call you all at the same time? and you didn't check with another group?
stories sourced like this have no validity except to cast a bad light on america.
thanks again ABC

Being warned of a terrorist threat before it actually happens, would encourage citizens to stay on watch and notice anything unusual. But again, we are talking about the Bush administration.

Posted by: nyguy | Jun 30, 2007 8:08:33 PM

If the US knows the threat ahead of time then, why did they not went after the terrorist. They waited for it to happened and investigate. What kind of BS is that? You know it then go after it. Don't be telling lies now that you have advance knowledge of it and did not do anything. Lives save are more important. Your intelligence is nothing if you don't act on it. Don't be so stupid that you let it happened without acting on your intelligence.

Posted by: marc | Jun 30, 2007 8:28:15 PM

Why is it only morons post messages on these things? I guess I'm one now too? Steve

Posted by: steve behm | Jun 30, 2007 8:37:15 PM

Just last month the DHS Office of Inspector General released a report proving that the Federal Air Marshal Service (FAMS) refuses to share intelligence information with other U.S. law enforcement agencies –– in fact, they don't even share intel with their own air marshals in the field. So are you really surprised the FAMS doesn't share intelligence with another friendly country? The wall between U.S. federal agencies that was present prior to 9/11 has grown higher and thicker ever since.

Posted by: FBI G-man | Jun 30, 2007 8:52:59 PM

The above comments regarding the close relationship between US and UK intel agencies is entirely true. If there were, in fact, a credible threat, it would have been shared. If not, it would not have been.

Posted by: intheknow | Jun 30, 2007 9:00:17 PM

IF this is true the americans should be investigated for failing to report this to the british goverment, It was very lucky that no one was killed or badly injured as many familys with young children were traveling to and from there holiday destinations i live in glasgow and the thought of this happening on my own doorstep is frighting. Scotland is a land of safety from terrisom but this inncident is a dark reminder that this can happen anywere at any moment in time but its the goverment responsablity to act on information but when two counrtries can go to war together they can share information like this.

Posted by: matthew | Jun 30, 2007 9:06:37 PM

I cannot believe that US intelligence services would have known of the threat of an attack in Britian, Europe or on any who stand with US and not have shared that critical data in a timely fashion. ABC was remis in not having queried USG officials as to whether such known threats were conveyed to their British counterparts. If the USG had knowledge and did not convey it to our closest allies, we will have suffered an, undoubtedly, mortal blow to our international integrity. I cannot believe that ABC did raise the obvious question which went begging in this pathetic attempt at reporting.

The U.K. has a Muslim fifth column that has existed for at least twenty years. Unlike the U.S., there are lot of radicalized Muslims in the U.K. MI5 is currently watching about 2000 of these Muslims and 30 plots? That's a lot of people to watch. Gordon Brown and Parliament better do what needs to be done and that is to deport the foreign-born Muslim extremists and intern the native-born Muslim extremists until the problem is rooted out.

Posted by: Jason | Jun 30, 2007 10:12:58 PM

All of you who are on the bush bashing bandwagon advocating "why didnt we do something if we knew" Stop and think a minute just how many tips of intell our country has on a daily basis. All of you advocating that we should have gone and done something are the same people that are screaming that Bush lied to invade Iraq. Point being just because you have intell, doesn't mean it is always accurate. Extremists are extremists and when they don't care if they die it is usually only a matter of time before they succeed. It doesn't take a military master mind to drive a bomb laden car or strap a bomb to yourself and Praise Satan and then blow your self up. The real people who should be pissed and doing more is the muslim community. Time to get off your sorry butts and pitch in.

Posted by: chris | Jun 30, 2007 11:35:00 PM

Ok, someone point out to me where it says the US knew but "didn't tell". Because I'm not seeing that. I'm seeing that intelligence indicated two weeks ago that an attack was "probable". But where you're getting they knew and didn't inform is beyond me.

A time will come.....soon I hope...when we will stand up and say "i've had enough of this crap" and do what's necessary to ensure these fools do not continue on their "religious" bombing campaign.

Posted by: Tired of the Left | Jun 30, 2007 11:39:03 PM

Please People!!!!!!!! Get with it already!!!!! Who do you really think wants you to believe that the americans knew anout this and did nothing. Don't be dumb!!! If they had any credible intelligence, then you would have received it. What good is it anyway for the US to know of an attack on your soil? That's like saying that Greece knew of an attack on Canadian soil before it happened. Stop putting blame all over the US and start putting it back on Al -Quaida-where it belongs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: nancy | Jul 1, 2007 12:16:55 AM

it never fails to baffle me that some folks out there whine about not being warned ahead of time regarding terror attacks. you're being warned on a daily basis that's repeated time and again, day in day out. look at all the violence perpetrated in the name of islam, yet you're SHOCKED that a muslim would drive a car into an airport terminal.

As an american I feel a stronge tie between the Brits and ourselfs. Even though the vast majority do not like or trust G.Bush the brits hopefully should realize that we also feel your grief and anger as you did for us. By back biting at each other we are letting the terrorist win, but instead realize our past with each other. I am a firm believer that there will come a time when we will all say enough is enough and just vaporize much of the middle east. these people kill and at the same time yell out for Alla. You are my friend and the ones I trust the most. Stay with us and we will stay with you.

Posted by: kevin | Jul 1, 2007 12:39:11 AM

this is just what i would expect from ABC news. Quick! Find a way to make the Bush Administration look bad! While you dont investigate, quote no reliable sources, and stir the pot as best you can. Honestly, you people are like a bunch of kids poking sticks at a turtle turned on it's back.

Hello. Terrorism is real. As far as the Bush andministration goes, they are not all that great on many issues, but to be quite realistic, there have been no major attacks in the US. Give them Kudos for that, and perhaps someone will beging to trust your news service again.

Posted by: l. johnston | Jul 1, 2007 12:48:54 AM

Hey Folks,

Remember the anger should be directed toward the attackers. At least hardline Christianity kept Europe safe from outsiders in the middle ages. Secularism although with good intentions, has hammered down Christianity so well, that there is no one left to take up the cross and strike down the infidel. If we blame each other folks, we will fall. Islam is the root of Muslim Extremist. You seculars out there, now is the time to turn your attention to the muslims.

Has anyone considered this with regard to the timing?

Last Thursday the Libyan man convicted on not very convincing evidence of bombing Pan-Am 103 had his appeal upheld, so the case has now been referred back to the High Court in Edinburgh. Pan-Am 103 as you should remember exploded over Lockerbie in southern Scotland and Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al-Megrahi currently resides at Her Majesty's Pleasure, Barlinnie in Glasgow having been found guilty of the bombing. A High Court re-trial could reveal Iranian complicity, as it is more likely that the Iranian government, rather than the Libyan one, would have ordered that attack. An indefinite delay to such a High Court re-trial for 'security reasons' would now be very convenient for those who wish this covered up.

As for those who attacked Glasgow Airport, they are just operatives, who have been mentored by someone higher above in the command structure.

Posted by: pete | Jul 1, 2007 4:54:26 AM

Perhaps this information from two weeks ago came from a "detained person" and resulted from "extra-lawful interrogation tactics" which perhaps violated the civil-rights of the terrorist. In that case it would be hypocritcal for America to share this information that resulted from violating rights and instead whould only be known after the innocent Scottish citizens had perished. But at least there would not be any hypocritical behavior!

Posted by: Guardian | Jul 1, 2007 5:08:35 AM

If I wasn't so cynical It would appear that the Bush government was quite happy in allowing the terrorist attack happen in Glasgow.

Why? to shore up Bush's reputation at home where he could run around all the media networks shouting they are coming they are coming, raising the fear stakes, remember the security mums

Looks like the British are expendable.

Why is anyone surprised that the US gov. knew about the potential threat and failed to warn us? The US only cares about itself. Half the US population doesn't even know that there are countries existing outside of its borders!

Here's hoping that the US will be the first to colonise another planet so we can ship the lot of them away from Earth.

Posted by: Flibble | Jul 1, 2007 7:26:48 AM

US Intelligence is better than Mossad.

Posted by: Indy | Jul 1, 2007 8:35:06 AM

This is all blah! As a american I feel sorry for the Scots and I would tell them to stand strong in the face of Terroist. As for the story of US government knowing, I believe it to be a lie. Maybe one person MIGHT have gotten a hint of a attack, but we all have HINTS of attack by even from these Terroist on a daily basis! As for what some people here say that Bush wants this or Bush only cares about himself or Americans only cares about themselves is really stupid. If Bush knew about it, he would have stopped it because it will make him look very bad, and second americans would care to stop this because many of them fly into Glasglow airport everyday, so more than likely there were americans there when this all happen! So a very stupid arguement. So people, just know be alert and watch for terroist when traveling- That's ALL!

Posted by: PJamerican | Jul 1, 2007 9:16:45 AM

I'm saying that the U.S. didn't know
Jack. They're just saying they did to give the false impression that their intelligence is better.

Posted by: Da Man | Jul 1, 2007 9:19:13 AM

The "ABC" report is no different from the reports 66 years ago that the British had intelligence that Pearl Harbour was going to be attacked. Their cementaries are full of terrorist's acts. If the "ABC" source was true, the US would have shared the information.

Posted by: Paul | Jul 1, 2007 9:48:28 AM

Yes, yes, yes, they are ALWAYS sharing intelligence information. Use your heads, people. If they make that information public, they risk exposing their intelligence sources. So they share with the authorities, NOT the public (who would just get carried away as you are here) and likely force the terrorists to, first, find and kill the mole within, second, shift the target elsewhere. Again, start using your heads.

The religion of peace loves you.

Posted by: Kat Stevens | Jul 1, 2007 10:10:41 AM

OK, here's the drill. Of course the US knew about it. We have the MOST sophisticated intelligence service in the world with ELINT. Washington Mil District also planned for 9/11 in YR 2000 with simulated attacks on the Pentagon, Sears Tower, and WTC. However, what is chatter and what is real? Additionally, don't you think it's odd that these attacks come precisiely at the change of government? Makes Bush and Blair look like geniuses and the Democrats (the 2008 campaign is going on here...) look like incompetents. A few Brits are expendable in this point of view... as long as the WAR and BIG Profits continue. WAKE UP. We should have our intel ops kill all the terrorists. it's not THAT hard. Having troops on the ground in the Mid-East, like 'Chinese Gordon', is another story.

Posted by: DwightDEisenhower | Jul 1, 2007 10:29:54 AM

Don't you get it? The Americans want these attacks to be successful.

The Cheney administration shrieks with laughter whenever an attack is successful so Cheney and Co. can justify and promote its imperial ambitions to attack the entire Middle East and loot the US Treasury through Haliburton and other contractors.

America - a great country if you own it!

I am from Glasgow and currently live in DC. I am shocked by what happened yesterday and only glad that there were no serious injuries to innocent people. As for security at Glasgow being poor what you have to remember is that Glasgow airport is a small airport and any time I have been there most recently January there has always been a very obvious police presence. The car hit the building quite a bit away from the main doors where there are always at least 3 police officers that I have seen. People who wish to inflict damage and mayhem will do what they have to. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. As for who knew in adavance or not at the end of the day probably would have made no difference.

Posted by: MT Hayes | Jul 1, 2007 10:38:07 AM

Would it not have been a good idea to share that with your so called allies? The incident could have been so much worse. Many people could have lost their lives.

You know, for the first time during this entire war.. I'm smiling at the fact something small has occurred on UK soil. Maybe the left wings will pull their heads from their butts and realize that we really have a world wide problem here. It's not just (as commonly thought in the UK Europe) the United States bullying countries around again by being in this war. There is a purpose, no matter how small it may seem sometimes. Believe me, as an American I do not agree with war, however, I do realize that it maybe essential.

Wake up and smell the aroma UK! Its on your doorstep now!

i am a Glaswegian, (Glasgow man) and lets face it if an idiot wants to drive a car into an airport,to blow it up he will try it, there is so much we can do, but it means turning our airports and busy streets into fortresses like they had in Northern Ireland in the 70s and 80s,these people are insane that commit these wicked crimes.

Posted by: neal | Jul 1, 2007 12:45:09 PM

To 'An American', no everyone does *not* want the USA to police the world, however when the IRA, most of whose finance and support comes from New York and Boston, was murdering British and Irish citizens, it would have been useful if the USA could have policed itself. However, successful US governments both Democrat and Republican, did little to clamp down on this terrorist funding, hence the fact that on this side of the pond, we've lived with terrorism for nearly four decades.

Oh, and those of us who are old enough to remember are well aware that it was the USA which first financed the Islamic Mujahadeen, from which was begat Al Qaeda.

Posted by: pete | Jul 1, 2007 1:21:27 PM

It sounds like, from all the news accounts, that the US shared this info but kept it secret from the general public. Sounds like a smart move to me.

Posted by: Silver_Surfer | Jul 1, 2007 1:22:26 PM

This is bring back more hate and deaths and I feel for the people in Glasgrow and I have to say that everyone in the gov knew. I remmber when the government was warn during the summer and it was on the news and then it wasn't said again. Then when the 911 happen, I ask myself why didn't they warn the police and everyone at the airports. What are they hiding from us that they don't want us to knew. Just like this war which is now out of control a war which we are losing our men and women and others and for what? Yes I like to know why they didn't notified Glasgrow. I am getting the feeling that this president of ours do not care about anyone but himself and others who have more to gain in the oild businesses. I feel I no longer feel like an American who was born and raise. I see this world of ours are repeating its history as well as all other nations. Why don't these so call governments and presidents go back to school and start reading our history and they would see that they are repeating it again. For this is how I see it and I love history and right now our how president is selling our country down the tub and only care about having everyone agree with him or they be out in the cold.

I feel ashame of my president who knew and didn't have the guts to let everyone know about the attacts that could have been prevent let alone still lieing to us about it. If the CIA knew they should have given notices of what is to happen earlyer like when they first found out and this would have been stopped.

So I would like to take this time to say that I am sorry that our president and his so call government people didn't let you know for they did the same to us on the 911. I pray that they will next time do the right thing and this would never happen again.

Once again my prayers go out to you all.

May God protect all people of all nations of the world.

It is time that all the world nations presidents, government get together and sit at the table and talk for killing will not solve anything only destory all life of all the world on earth.

Thank you for letting me share my thoughts.

According to Michael Chertoff, the US *did* share this information with the proper authorities in the UK. The URL for the news article confirming this is on the front page of ABCnews.com

Perhaps we shouldn't be so quick to jump to (in this case, terrible and inaccurate) conclusions in the future?
