PENGUINS SIGN DEFENSEMAN WADE SKOLNEY

PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed free agent defenseman Wade Skolney, it was announced Friday by General Manager Ray Shero.

Skolney, 25, appeared in 56 games with the Philadelphia Phantoms of the American Hockey League during the 2005-06 season, recording five assists and 197 penalty minutes. He also played in one game for the Philadelphia Flyers last season, going scoreless with two penalty minutes.

The 6-0 and 197 pound blue liner has appeared in 215 career games with the Philadelphia Phantoms (AHL) since 2002, recording 31 points (3+28) and 509 penalty minutes.

Skolney was a member of the 2004-05 Phantoms team that captured the AHL’s Calder Cup Championship, tallying one assist and 43 penalty minutes in 21 playoff games that year.

Skolney, a Wynyard, Saskatchewan native, was originally signed by the Philadelphia Flyers as an undrafted free agent on May 20, 2002.
