Snicket Socks

by Sabine Riefler

These socks were inspired by the dress Violet Baudelaire (Emily Browning) wears in the movie Lemony Snicket – A Series of Unfortunate Events. I wanted to translate the net-like sleeves into knitting.

The socks are knitted with a short row heel made of double stitches. If you are familiar with the wrap and turn method you can do it that way as well, or do any other heel you prefer.

Difficulty Level

Intermediate

Sizes

S (M, L, XL)
Size M corresponds to German shoe size 38 (US 7). Pattern is customizable to any size.

Materials

1 ball Regia 4fädig sock yarn (25% polyamide, 75% new wool; 230 yd [210m] per 100g), color light grey

Set of 5 US 2 [2.5mm] double-pointed needles, or size to get gauge

marker, yarn needle, 2 spare needles, cable needle (cn)

Yarn substitutes

Any sock yarn such as Opal, Lorna’s Laces, Regia

Gauge

30 sts and 42 rows = 4” [10cm] in stockinette

Techniques

kr: k into back of st on RS rows; p into back of st on WS rows

skp: slip st, k1, pass sl st over--1 st dec'd

sryo: sl st to right hand needle with yarn in front, then pull yarn to back of work over the needle – st looks now as if there are two sts. This sryo double stitch is always knit/purled together as one st.

Lattice stitch pattern

Multiple of 6 sts

Rnd 1: *sl first st to cn and hold at front, p1, kr 1 from cn, sl one st to cn and hold at back, kr 1, p from cn, p2* - repeat * to * to end of rnd.

Rnd 2: p 1, *kr2, p4*, repeat * to * to end of rnd.

Rnds 3/5/7: p1, *sl 1 st to cn and hold at front, kr1, kr1 from cn, p4*, repeat * to * to end of rnd.

Rnds 4/6/8: p1, * kr2, p4*, repeat * to * to end of rnd.

Rnd 9: *sl 1 st to cn and hold at back, kr 1, p1 from cn, sl 1 st to cn and hold at front, p1, kr1 from cn, p2*, repeat * to * to end of rnd.

Rnd 10: *kr1, p2, kr1, p2* repeat * to end of rnd, but do not p last st of round, sl it to cn and hold to back of work.

Rnd 11: kr1, p st from cn (last st of previous round), p2, sl st to cn and hold at front, p1, kr st from cn, * sl st to cn and hold at back, kr 1, p st from cn, p2, sl st to cn and hold at front, p1, kr st from cn*, repeat * to * to end of rnd.

Rnd 12: *p4, kr2*, repeat * to * to end of rnd.

Rnds 13/15/17: p 4, *sl sto to cn and hold at front, kr1, kr st from cn, p4* repeat * to * to the end of round

Rnds 14/16/18: *p4, kr2*, repeat * to * to end of rnd, but do not kr last stitch on row 18, sl it to cn and hold to front of work.

Rnd 19: p1, kr1 from cn, *p2, sl st to cn and hold at back, kr 1, p st from cn, sl st to cn and hold at front, p1, kr st from cn* repeat * to * to end of rnd.

Rnd 20: *kr1, p2, kr1, p2* repeat * to * to end of rnd.

These 20 rnds form pattern.

Leg

With long tail method, cast on 54 (60, 66, 72) sts (or any multiple of 6 sts). Distribute evenly over 4 dpns and join to work in the round. Place marker. Work 20 rows in cuff pattern: *kr1, p2* around. Begin lattice pattern with rnd 1 and work until leg measures 8" [20cm] or desired length.

Heel

The short row heel will be worked in stockinette stitch, back and forth, over half the stitches. (If you are familiar with a different short row heel or prefer any other heel – work your preferred heel).

After you have completed your last rnd on the leg, k27 (30, 33, 36) sts onto one needle. (You will work heel over these sts.) Turn, make a sryo as described above. Put sryo onto spare needle. P 26 (29, 32, 35). Turn, make a sryo as described above. Put sryo onto spare needle. *K to end of row, turn, make a sryo, put sryo onto spare needle, p to the end of row, turn, make a sryo, put sryo onto spare needle.* Repeat * to * until 9 (10, 11, 12) sts are left on main needle. Work 1 rnd over all 54 (60, 66, 72) sts, keeping continuity of lattice pattern on instep sts. K across sts on main needle, k1 from spare needle,*turn, sryo, p across main needle, p1 from spare needle, turn, sryo, *k sts of main needle including sryo st (double st worked as one), k1 from spare needle, turn, sryo, p across main needle, p sryo double st as one, p1 from spare needle, turn, sryo,*. Repeat * to * until all sts from spare needles have been worked. You should now have as many stitches as you cast on!

Foot

Redistribute sts evenly over 4 needles. Put marker at middle of the heel, this is the new beginning of the round. K sts on 1st needle, work pattern over needles 2 and 3, k sts on needle 4. Work as set with lattice pattern on instep and stockinette on sole until foot is 2" [5cm] shorter than desired length.

Toe

Be sure that sts are divided evenly. Decrease as follows:
Needles 1 & 3: k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1
Needles 2 & 4: k1, skp, k to end

Decrease as set on every 4th rnd a total of 7 times, then on every rnd until 8 sts rem. Cut yarn, draw through rem sts and fasten off.
