The Sporting Life

Although no sports teams proudly carry the AU colours, our students are still active in arenas and on fields and courts in communities across Canada and around the world. Canada's national sport is particularly well represented.

Brent Gauvreau and wife in Prague

Brent Gauvreau has been a BMgmt student since 2002 because "AU is perfect for my crazy lifestyle."

Prior to playing hockey in Italy, Norway and, most recently, Germany, the Ontario native played for teams in the OHL, AHL and ECHL leagues.

"I have been able to write exams in Canada, the U.S., New Zealand and Germany. It would be much more difficult to obtain a degree if not for AU. Every year I am living in a new place but I can always continue my studies.

"I have been very impressed with AU services. I always get a quick response

when needed ... because students don't attend on a campus the services provided are key to the success of AU."

Brent's positive AU experience has influenced his wife, Sarah (shown left with Brent in Prague), who begins her MDE studies with AU this fall while they continue to live in Europe.

Jonathan Filewich

Jonathan Filewich, a right winger with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the AHL, is also combining his sport with AU studies.

"I know my hockey career is not going to last forever," Jonathan said. "About two years ago, someone said, 'Why don't you take a course, one at a time?'"

"I love to read, so I read an hour or two every day. It has been great so far and it has kept my mind busy," he says of his BA studies.

Ryan O'Marra

Ryan O'Marra has played on two of Canada's gold winning World Junior teams and was recently with the Saginaw Spirits of the OHL. Earlier this year he was traded to the Edmonton Oilers and will play the 2007-08 season, either in Edmonton or in Springfield, MA with their AHL affiliate.

"(AU) has allowed me to pursue my post-secondary education in the timeframe that fits my hectic career. I can read the text at my leisure, and finish my assignments without having to attend a class at a set time in a set place.

"I recommend AU to anyone with a busy lifestyle that wants to obtain an excellent education that can actually fit around their own personal schedule."
