Ubisoft pulls MindQuiz out of the market

Posted Jun 29, 2007 at 09:16PM by Glen D. Listed in: News, Games Tags: Japan, Ubisoft, BBC
Mind Quiz - Image 1Ubisoft has decided to immediately stop selling its Nintendo DS game Mind Quiz and intends to have all copies pulled out of the market because the game was found offensive by certain people.

The French publisher apologized and said that it is now working with the developers and game retailers to try and correct what was found to be a derogatory term to people who have not achieved well in one portion of the game.

A woman in Belfast who lost a child to cerebral palsy and whose father is also afflicted with the disorder was playing the game when she came across the screen that berated players with low scores using words offensive to the disabled. The woman called BBC Radio and her sentiments were quickly brought to the attention of everyone concerned.

"The game was developed in Japan, and we unfortunately did not pick up on the offending word in our quality assurance. We are currently working with the developer to find a way to rectify the issue." explains a Ubisoft representative.

Civilizations Revolution - Image 1

We've got some artwork for the upcoming Sid Meier game called Civilization Revolution. The master of strategy games takes his new title for a multi-platform run and we couldn't be more excited.

Firaxis Games is working with 2K Games to make all the platforms viable ones for Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution. At this point, they're relatively mum on details except for the announcement that it will ship for all platforms involved next spring.

Judging from these screens, the devs will maintain some elements of the previous games in the series such as growth and development of technology. Much speculation can be made as to how the controls will be for consoles and what kind of engine the game will employ. Civilizations Revolution is certainly a game to watch out for and we'll update you as soon as more info is on the table.

And in business and industry news, Nintendo was granted bragging rights recently as the Japanese gaming giant hit an all-time stock high on Monday, June 25, breaking past the worth of Sony Corp. as a whole (and not just SCEA) for one fleeting moment. The company's shares rose 1.5% that day, raising it's capitalization worth to US$ 53 billion.

Investors hike Nintendo up, fleetingly touched Sony - Image 1

And although the market closed with Nintendo's shares taking a slight dip, it allowed only a 1% cap from Sony's overall capitalization worth. It appears that while the gaming community was eyeing the console race closely and the media's heartbeat was synced to each move the three big players make, investors have been turning the tide of battle to Nintendo behind the curtains.

Just last fiscal year, Nintendo only managed US$ 7.8 billion in profits, while Sony and its consumer electronics empire (Sony) encompassing movies (Sony Pictures Entertainment), music (Sony Music) and games (Sony Online Entertainment, SCEA, SCEE) pretty much vacuumed US$ 61 billion worth of cash.

According to analysts in Asia, there's much promise in the base of support for the Kyoto-based company's efforts. In fact, while PlayStation 3 fans have reduced their visage of the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS as mere toys and Xbox 360 fans have flaunted their superior online gaming capabilities (a feature the Wii has lacked), analysts believe Nintendo is lop-siding the competition in reality, no matter what people choose to believe.

NPD reports, real-time sales numbers, and investor demand for security analysis on the gaming giants has spurred optimistic predictions for the company, including Macquarie Securities analyst David Gibson's forecast of a JP¥ 50,000 (US$ 404) 12-month share target - that's a US$ 40 gap closing for an entire fiscal year and up from last week's JP¥ 44,500 (US$ 361.15).

Other predictions were also favorable over Nintendo's choice to invest more on commercials promoting DS and Wii games, while Wii hardware shipment forecasts were pegged at a positive 17.8 million units, up from 14.2 million, which Gibson believes Nintendo may be able to grab within the present fiscal year alone.

Dragon's Lair to rise on DS

Posted Jun 29, 2007 at 05:04AM by Victor B. Listed in: News, Games, Screenshots, Dragon's Lair Tags: Digital Leisure

Dragon's Lair DS - Image 1

Here's a nifty new development for DS fans everywhere. Digital Leisure is a leading publisher of interactive DVD and CD games including the classic Dragon's Lair line and the American Laser Games series of shooting games">Digital Leisure recently announced that they're bringing Dragon's Lair to the DS. According to their press release, Dragon's Lair DS will be sporting some new enhancements, such as stylus control and Rumble Pak support.

In Dragon's Lair, you're a knight trying to rescue a princess from the clutches of an evil dragon. To do so, you've got to go into the aptly named dragon's lair, by bypassing traps and defeating dangerous monsters created by a dark wizard who wants nothing more than to see you fail.

Here's the full list of features they're planning on bringing to the classic adventure game:
  • Dual Screen (book-style) full-screen action
  • Single Screen (top-down) full-screen action
  • D-Pad & Touch screen support (in both Dual Screen & Single Screen modes)
  • Voice Recognition
  • Rumble Pak Support
  • Arcade & Home modes: This feature allows you to switch between the Arcade and Home versions of the game (Arcade default). The differences between the two are that the latter includes the additional sequences that were not in the original Arcade game.
  • Game Statistics: Displays your lives and overall score
  • Lives: Choose between unlimited, standard 5 lives or sudden death single life mode
  • Difficulty: Easy or Hard. The Hard option complicates things by adding additional moves in certain sequences and mixes up the scenes for less linear stage progression. Timing of moves is also affected – achieve higher scores
  • Visual Move Guide On/Off: Toggle this option on to bring up a visual clue that shows whether you entered the right move or not. A red circle means you entered the wrong move or your timing is off, a green one lets you know you did it right.
  • Watch mode (learning mode – video mode): All game scenes without deaths – all game scenes with deaths scenes, in addition to an option where the player can choose to watch a specific scene
In any case, we've got a ton of screens of the game for you, as well as two shots of the game being played. No word on when it'll be coming out though, but expect it to make waves when it does. Till then, we'll be looking for new information regarding this classic title.

Tesco flamed for game price slashes

Posted Jun 28, 2007 at 09:47PM by Ceasar S. Listed in: News Tags: Electronic Arts, PS2, UK, Don McCabe, Tesco
Tesco flamed for game price slashes - Image 1Reports coming in from the UK point out that one of the region's retail giants, Tesco, has caught the angry gaze of other members of the retail trade after allegedly launching a price slash campaign for most of its games in stock. Games were offered online for prices as low as GB£ 3.00 (US$ 6.05).

Popular titles such as Electronic Arts' The Sims 2 for the PC were offered for amazingly low prices, along with a number of PS2 games offered at GB£ 6.00 (US$ 12.05), DS and PSP games offered for GB£ 10.00 (US$ 20.05), and Xbox 360 titles at GB£ 15.00 (US$ 30.05).

Don McCabe of Chips frowned at the wake Tesco created with its major price cut campaign, but dutifully explained Tesco decision to "devalue" games. According to him, Tesco's non-food sales is steadily dwindling to a halt, and the chain's allocations for non-food items have also been reflecting that.

"They've reduced the amount of space that they give to DVDs now because they've effectively screwed that market up, and they've stopped doing CD singles as well," said McCabe. However, he believes that the move can have a detrimental effect on the publishers. He later explained:

If you devalue a product enough it turns consumers off and they stop buying. There's a risk that they could do that with games. There's a limit to how much the publishers out there will devalue their product. I'm sure they could go even lower, but this might not be with publishers' blessings.

Mastertronic's Garry Williams also reflected the same sentiments, stating that the effect could also hurt Tesco as well. "You have to ask the parties concerned what the long term benefits are. If [Tesco] did fund this [from their basket spend] they will have some serious repercussions from their High Street accounts," Williams concluded.

There have been no official comments made on Tesco's behalf as of press time.

PuzzleManiak v1.5

Posted Jun 28, 2007 at 09:27PM by Tim Y. Listed in: Homebrew Games Tags: Sudoku
PuzzleManiak v1.5 screenshot - Image 1Got room for another cranial homebrew game on your DS? If that answer is a resounding yes, we're letting the NDS community know that PuzzleManiak v1.5 is now in circulation, ready to be loaded into your card.

Not sure what to expect? This partial port of Simon Tatham's Portable Puzzle Collection carries nine puzzle games in its database (Tents, Dominosa, Mines, Bridges, Light Up, Pattern, Net, Untangle, Sudoku), with an integrated "copy/paste" mode being added to the last game. Here are the directions to using this new mode:
  1. When clicking on the top right icon, the "copy" mode is activated: Sudoku Copy Mode
  2. Next time, you’ll click a square the value inside it will be copied.
  3. Then, the "paste" mode is automatically activated: Sudoku Paste Mode
  4. Then, all your following clicks on the grid will paste the value you copied to the clicked square.
  5. You can also "copy" an empty square, thus you’ll delete all clicked squares.
Other major updates included in v1.5 are a graphics fix for untangle, and the addition of WiFi support. Enjoy the game, but don't forget to view the file readme for extra usage details.

Media Create revealed their latest Japanese weekly software sales chart with some interesting twists; big names lost their throne and new games took the top 10 by storm.

No need to run, you're ahead by miles - Image 1The top-notcher isn't exactly surprising, considering how Zelda sold so much just two days ago. Itagaki Street DS, despite barely making it to Famitsu's weekly most wanted lists, crashed in with whopping numbers. Strong titles are still holding ground, but the new ones might prove to be quite a challenge.

Strange enough, Trusty Bell dropped out so soon after its smashing debut. Looks like hearts were torn and RPG love scattered with games like Growlanser VI: Precarious World, Mana-Khemia: Gakuen no Renjinjutsu Shitachi, and FolksSoul entering the fray.
  1. The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (DS) - 303,000 / NEW
  2. Itadaki Street DS (DS) - 149,000 / NEW
  3. DS Observation Training (DS) - 44,000 / 265,000
  4. Wii Sports (Wii) - 34,000 / 1,756,000
  5. Growlanser VI: Precarious World (PS2) - 27,000 / NEW
  6. Hajime no Ippo: The Fighting Revolution (Wii) - 25,000 / NEW

SanDisk - Image 1Mobile phone and NDS owners may find common ground in this particular news bit, which pertains to SanDisk and their upcoming 6 and 8GB MicroSD High Capacity (microSDHC) flash cards.

The manufacturer has just sent out word that they have begun sending out samples of both flash memory drives to major phone manufacturers and mobile network operators for testing and evaluation.

Shipping is expected to begin late this year, although SanDisk has yet to announce the news card's expected retailer prices. For the mobile phone owners, the 8GB card will enable you to carry a total of 2,000 songs, or more than 5,000 pictures, or up to 5 hours of MPEG-4 videos.

We also imagine the guys in the portable gaming scene will find this announcement uplifting, given that homebrew-enabling cards like CycloDS Revolution support the format. Games aside, that'll leave plenty of room for your comics, videos, images, and the ton of homebrew you'll need to keep all these files running properly. Keep posted in case the test results for SanDisk's upcoming microSDHC cards get released.
