The best selling album of 1965 was not by the Beatles, nor by The Rolling Stones, both of whom achieved long running no.1 albums during the year, but the soundtrack to the film version of The Sound Of Music, the latest of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals to be transferred from the stage to film, following Carousel, Oklahoma, The King And I and South Pacific, all of which had reached no.1, usually for very long runs and The Sound Of Music was no exception, spending 20 of its total of 70 weeks at no.1 during 1965 in two separate runs of 10 weeks each from June to August and from October to December. In addition to 20 weeks at no.1, the album also resided at no.2 for 11 weeks, indeed it did not leave the top 2 positions from the beginning of June 1965 all the way through until mid June 1967.


The Sound Of Music was the final collaboration between Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. Although many record buyers already possessed the Broadway and London cast recordings, the film soundtrack was phenomenally successful, with Julie Andrews in the lead role of Maria Von Trapp and Christopher Plummer as the Captain with seven children whom Maria is sent to look after from the convent and eventually falls in love with. The film discarded the songs sung by the supporting cast, How Can Love Survive, No Way To Stop It and An Ordinary Couple and replaced them with Julie Andrews' Something Good and I Have Confidence. The soundtrack also retained the favourites from the show, Maria, Sixteen Going On Seventeen, My Favourite Things, Climb Every Mountain, Do Re Mi and Edelweiss.


Since Julie Andrews contributed to seven of the songs, it was not exclusively her album but she was undoubtedly the star, as was the case with the fifth biggest selling album of the year, Mary Poppins, another film soundtrack with seven songs featuring Julie Andrews as the eponymous nanny. Mr & Mrs Banks living in England during the Edwardian period, need a nanny for their two children and the perfect nanny flies in, not only able to look after two precocious children, but take them on magical adventures too. Mary Poppins entered the charts in April 1965 and spent the next year bouncing around the positions inside the top 5, eventually peaking at no.2 for two weeks in December. The Sherman Brothers, Richard and Robert had seen Julie Andrews in My Fair Lady and had written songs specifically with her in mind for the role of Mary Poppins like A Spoonful Of Sugar, Feed The Birds and Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. The film also benefited from Dick Van Dyke as Bert, the pavement artist, sideshow performer and chimney sweep with the absolutely terrible Cockney accent singing Jolly Holiday, Step In Time and the award winning Chim Chim Cheree. Finally, there were also some good songs from the supporting characters, The Life I Lead and Let's Go Fly A Kite from Dave Tomlinson (Mr Banks) and Sister Suffragette from Glynis Johns (Mrs Banks).


In the US, the albums successes were reversed with The Sound Of Music spending just two weeks at no.1 and Mary Poppins at the top for 14 weeks during 1965, possibly due to the sales, only five years previously of the Sound Of Music cast recording which had spent 15 weeks at no.1 in 1960.


The Beatles did achieve 19 weeks at no.1 in 1965 with three separate albums, beginning the year with Beatles For Sale at the top throughout January and spending all the weeks until mid May in the top 3, returning to no.1 for three final weeks in May. By August they were back at the top with their fifth album, the soundtrack to the film Help which remained on top for 9 weeks. Their sixth album, Rubber Soul moved into the no.1 position on the final week of 1965.


Help has The Beatles all playing James Bond, chased around the world, particularly the more exotic locations, attempting to escape an Indian cult who believe in human sacrifice and set their sights on Ringo who has on his finger and cannot remove, the sacrificial ring of the cult's Goddess Kali. The cover features the four Beatles spelling out the word HELP in semaphore, but actually spelling out NUJV, the start of many conspiracy theories surrounding the band, NUJV allegedly standing for New Unknown John Vocalist, meaning that John Lennon was dead and had been replaced. The soundtrack includes seven songs that feature in the film and seven that didn't. Two songs that made it to the film were the two number one hits Help and Ticket To Ride, while one of the Beatles most famous songs, not released as a single in 1965, Yesterday, one of the group's greatest ballads was included even though it was not in the film and they bounce along very nicely, like the old days of Merseybeat on the tracks You Like Me Too Much, You've Got To Hide Your Love Away, You're Going To Lose That Girl and It's Only Love.


By the time Rubber Soul was released, The Beatles were above writing and recording mere pop songs and the variety of their maturity showed with the use of a sitar on Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown), Greek guitar and foreign language vocals on Michelle and a harpsichord on In My Life, although this was actually a piano played by George Martin and speeded up to sound like a harpsichord. George Harrison had recently been taking sitar lessons from Ravi Shankar and all four of the Beatles were becoming more interested in how their instruments would sound speeded up or slowed down, using sound effects on tracks for the first time. The Beatles were being influenced at this point in their career by the US West Coast sound of The Byrds and Bob Dylan's folk rock. Lyrically, Lennon & McCartney were also maturing and moving away from simple love songs to an extra-marital affair in Norwegian Wood, reverse sexism in Drive My Car and dark, bitter themes were explored on Girl, You Wont See Me and Nowhere Man.


The Rolling Stones second album titled Rolling Stones no.2 spent nine weeks at no.1 between February and April but their fans who considered them equal to the Beatles were in for a shock as their third album Out Of Our Heads stopped at no.2 for just one week in November behind the Sound Of Music. The Rolling Stones no.2 like its predecessor contained mostly R&B cover versions, Everybody Needs Somebody To Love, Down The Road Apiece, You Can't Catch Me, Under The Boardwalk and Susie Q but there are three tracks credited to Jagger and Richards, What A Shame, Grown Up Wrong and Off The Hook. It used the same cover as the US release 12X5 but only four of the tracks had already been used on that album while a further seven came from what would become the US LP Rolling Stones Now. Out Of Our Heads in the US included The Last Time and I Can't Get No Satisfaction, two number one singles, but on the UK version, they were replaced by Oh Baby We Got A Good Thing Going, Heart Of Stone and I'm Free, the latter two Jagger and Richards compositions. The album opened with the rockin She Said Yeah and moved onto a soulful cover of Mercy Mercy. Perhaps with the two number one singles included, it would have dislodged The Beatles' Help, but this was not the custom at the time.


One artist who had been bouncing around the lower regions of the charts with two albums during 1964, Bob Dylan hit the top 10 in the Spring of 1965 with both The Freewheelin Bob Dylan and The Times They Are A Changin, Freewheelin moving up to no.1 in April and The Times eventually peaking at no.4. Freewheelin only had one week at the top when it had to make way for both Rolling Stones no.2 and Beatles For Sale, but it did return for one week in May only to be replaced by a new Bob Dylan album Bringing It All Back home. Another 1964 album Another Side Of Bob Dylan entered the top 10 during this flurry of activity in April and May 1965 for just one week at no.8 and by the end of the year, yet another new album Highway 61 Revisited entered, eventually peaking at no.4 in November.


Bob Dylan was born Robert Allen Zimmerman in 1941 in Minnesota and learned to play both the guitar and harmonica as a child. Even at the very start, he was not considered a great singer, in fact many early comments were that he couldn't sing in tune at all and may be better off just writing poetry. He formed a band called the Golden Chords while at high school and studied art at the University of Minnesota. Here he began to show a liking more for folk songs than pop music and moved to New York after graduating to play in the folk community in Greenwich Village. His debut album, Bob Dylan was released in 1962, containing standard folk and protest songs, but only two original compositions, Talkin New York and Song To Woody, a tribute to Woody Guthrie. Another track on the album was House Of The Rising Sun, a traditional railroad song. He concentrated on writing, mainly political protest songs and the second LP, The Freewheelin Bob Dylan features virtually all original Dylan songs including Blowin In The Wind, A Hard Rains A Gonna Fall, Don't Think Twice It's Alright and I Shall Be Free. He also looked inward to his own feelings on the issues of the early 1960s on the songs Bob Dylan's Blues and Bob Dylan's Dream. The Times They Are A Changin continues with ten tracks all written, sung and played by Dylan with a minimum of production, the title track, another political comment that was rarely beaten in the mid 1960s, With God On Our Side, North Country Blues and Only A Pawn In Their Game also filled with social observation and Ballad Of Hollis Brown and The Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll tales of injustice.


Bringing It All Back Home was also a completely Bob Dylan written LP and was the first with an electric backing band, often described as the first folk-rock LP, although the second side of the LP reverts back to Dylan on acoustic guitar and harmonica. The album begins with Subterranean Homesick Blues, a hard rockin track that is remembered as much for its accompanying video with Bob Dylan throwing away cue cards following the lyrics of the song. Other highlights of the album include Maggie's Farm, On The Road Again, It's All Over Now Baby Blue, It's Alright Ma I'm Only Bleeding and one of his most famous songs owing to a hit cover version by The Byrds, Mr Tambourine Man. Gates Of Eden was possibly the most prophetic, forecasting the end of the sixties and the generation of music lovers who at this time, had nothing else to worry about.


Another Side Of Bob Dylan referred to the side that didn't protest about all things political with the stand out tracks being All I Really Want To Do, Chimes Of Freedom, I Shall Be Free, I Don't Believe You and It Aint Me Babe.


Highway 61 stretched from New Orleans, through Memphis and up to Duluth, Bob Dylan's birthplace and on to the Canadian border. Otherwise known as The Blues Highway, it was often used as a lyric in blues numbers and there was much folklore about this piece of road, albeit a long one. Bessie Smith was killed in a car crash on highway 61, Robert Johnson allegedly sold his soul to the devil at the crossroads of highways 61 and 49 and Martin Luther King would be killed at a motel just off highway 61. Highway 61 Revisted was Bob Dylan's first completely electric album with a full Rock n Roll backing band. The LP opened with 6 minutes of Like A Rolling Stone and closed with one of the longest tracks on a pop LP to date, the 11 minute Desolation Row, taking a journey through the tracks It Takes A Lot To Laugh, From A Buick 6, Ballad Of A Thin Man, Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues and Tombstone Blues. This was the album that Dylan showcased at the Newport Folk Festival, an obviously conservative gathering who could not understand what Dylan had done to folk music by including electric guitars and drums and other Rock n Roll instruments. He only performed three songs but that was enough when two of them were Maggie's Farm and Like A Rolling Stone, not exactly typically folk songs.


Another artist in a similar style, beginning their chart career in 1964 but not hitting the top 10 until this year was Joan Baez whose album Joan Baez in Concert volume 2 finally reached the top 10 in July, eventually reaching no.8. Joan Baez no.5 was more successful, hitting no.3 and becoming her most successful charting album, spending 5 weeks in that position in July and August. She also hit no.9 with her first album Joan Baez and at the end of the year, a fourth top 10 album was achieved with Farewell Angelina.


Joan Baez was born in New York in 1941 and first gained recognition in 1959 at the Newport Folk Festival. Her debut album was released in 1960 and consisted of traditional folk melodies and children's ballads, Silver Dagger, East Virginia, Wildwood Flower, Little Moses and a version of House Of The Rising Sun. She became the face of folk music, singing at political events and headlining at various festivals, her music moving away from traditional folk and towards the various protests movements, bringing her into contact with Bob Dylan, with whom she had a brief affair. The first album finally hit the top 10 in July 1965 and was joined the same month by Joan Baez In Concert Volume 2 and Volume 5. In December, she had a fourth top 10 album of the year with Farewell Angelina. In Concert Volume 2 was a live album featuring just her singing and accompanying herself with an acoustic guitar. She recorded two Bob Dylan songs for this album, Don't Think Twice It's All Right and With God On Our Side. This LP also included her most famous track, the song picked up by the civil rights movement of the mid 1960s, We Shall Overcome, but also moved her away from traditional folk on the country tracks Long Black Veil and Portland Town and even into Latin territory with the bossa nova track Manha De Carnival. Volume 5 of her In Concert series of LPs included her top 10 single There But For Fortune, another Bob Dylan song, It Aint Me Babe and more traditional folk songs, The Death Of Queen Jane, When You Hear Them Cuckoos Hollerin and So We'll Go No More A Roving. It also included her plaintiff cover versions of Johnny Cash's I Still Miss Someone and Richard Farina's Birmingham Sunday, a song about the bombing of a school in Alabama. By the time Farewell Angelina was released, she had also moved away from traditional folk melodies although the LP did contain the tracks The River In The Pines and The Wild Mountain Thyme. There were four Bob Dylan songs, the title track, plus It's All Over Now Baby Blue, Daddy You've Been On My Mind and A Hard Rains A Gonna Fall. She also included a track by a new British artist, Colours by Donovan.


Donovan Phillip Leitch, universally known only by his first name, was born in Glasgow in 1946 and made his name as a regular performer on the TV show Ready Steady Go. He was compared to Bob Dylan, becoming known as the British answer to Dylan because he sang traditional folk songs, played the harmonica and guitar and looked and dressed like a ragamuffin, but the similarity ended there as Donovan had a pretty voice and was more interested in flower power and the beginnings of the hippy movement than protesting against war and politics. He hit no.3 with his first album What's Bin Did And What's Bin Hid which included his own compositions Catch The Wind, Josie, Cutting Out, Keep On Truckin, To Sing For You and Tangerine Puppet as well as Woody Guthrie's Car Car Riding In My Car.


The Beefeaters, Jim (Roger) McGuinn, David Crosby and Gene Clark were used to commercial acoustic folk but were inspired by the success of the Beatles to take up electric instruments and begin playing a blend of folk and rock, mixing the elements of the British invasion beat groups with traditional American folk. Adding Michael Clarke and Chris Hillman to their lineup, they changed their name to the Byrds who were also widely credited with the introduction of psychedelic music with their single Eight Miles High with its drug references and rumbling bass line. Their debut album was a cover of a Bob Dylan song, Mr Tambourine Man that managed to eclipse the original and become the definitive version with a twelve string guitar and close harmony vocals. They covered three other Dylan songs on the LP, Spanish Harlem Incident, Chimes Of Freedom and another hit single All I Really Want To Do. The original tracks written by band members included I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better, You Wont Have To Cry, Here Without and It's No Use and surprisingly the album ended with the Vera Lynn wartime hit We'll Meet Again. It was the album that established folk rock as a sub genre and went a long way to making an album the definitive statement a band could make with their music as opposed to a hit single which had been dominant all the time since the LP had been invented.


In the middle of the swinging 60s, several easy listening albums found their way into the album chart upper regions. Val Doonican charted for the first time with Lucky 13 Shades Of Val Doonican, peaking at no.2, Burt Bacharach hit no.3 with Hit Maker and eight years after first hitting the singles chart, Andy Williams finally charted his first LP, reaching no.4 with Almost There. After 11 of his albums charted in 1964, most of them posthumously, RCA released a Best Of Jim Reeves peaking at no.3, a title that was a little optimistic as the only hit single among the 12 tracks was his very first He'll Have To Go, although it did include a couple of his minor hits while he had still been alive, Adios Amigo and Guilty.


What was Val Doonican doing in the charts of the mid 1960s? An old fashioned Irish balladeer, who was about as uncool and far removed from beat groups as you could get. Nevertheless, he achieved five top 10 singles and five top 10 LPs from 1965 onwards beginning with The Lucky 13 Shades Of Val Doonican. He became famous on his own television show which featured him singing, taking it easy in a knitted sweater, sitting in a rocking chair and introducing a different guest star each week. Born Michael Valentine Doonican in Waterford in 1927, he started performing in Ireland and moved to England in 1951 joining a group called the Four Ramblers, playing traditional Irish songs, using this as a springboard for a solo radio show and appearances on Sunday Night At The London Palladium. The Lucky 13 Shades Of Val Doonican featured virtually all traditional Irish songs, The Agricultural Irish Girl, Delaney's Donkey, The Juice Of The Barley, Quit Kickin My Dog Around and Paddy McGinty's Goat.


Burt Bacharach was mainly noted as a composer along with Hal David of pop standards, songs covered by virtually all of the Middle Of The Road artists of the 1950s and 60s. He was born in Kansas City in 1928 and studied jazz and bebop in New York, playing in several jazz bands during the 1940s.His first songwriting success came in early 1958 when he wrote consecutive number one singles, The Story Of My Life and Magic Moments for Michael Holiday and Perry Como respectively. The album Hit Maker Burt Bacharach was a testament to his talent for writing for other people containing instrumental versions with choral backgrounds of the songs Walk On By, Wives And Lovers, Anyone Who Had A Heart, There's Always Something There To Remind Me, Twenty Four Hours From Tulsa, Blue On Blue, and a track he actually had a hit single with himself, Trains And Boats And Planes.


Andy Williams began singing in a church choir and formed a quartet with his three brothers. The group performed on radio throughout the Midwest and sang backing vocals on Bing Crosby's number one from 1944, Swinging On A Star. He went solo in the early 1950s and his first hit was his only number one single, Butterfly. Appealing more to the adult audience of Frank Sinatra and now Val Doonican, he had his own TV variety show, and despite album chart success in the US with many LPs including Moon River and Days Of Wine And Roses, he had to wait until 1965 before his first LP charted in the UK, Almost There centred on the hit single title track and also featuring MOR standards, Everybody Loves Somebody, Red Roses For A Blue Lady, It Had To Be You, You're Nobody Til Somebody Loves you and I Can't Stop Loving You.


Apart from The Beatles who had since moved on from the sound identified as Merseybeat, only The Searchers from the original break through hit makers in this genre hit the top 10 with Sounds Like The Searchers. The Hollies also peaked at no.8 with their eponymous second album as did The Dave Clark Five with the soundtrack to their film Catch Us If You Can.


As The Searchers LP Sounds Like The Searchers hit the top 10, the group were already a spent force and would never again hit the higher regions of either the singles or albums charts. They could not decide whether they wanted to stay with Merseybeat which for everyone else had moved on and filled the LP with covers from American writers, Bumble Bee, Goodnight Baby, Till you Say You'll Be Mine and Magic Potion. They also attempted to cover more standard Rock n Roll songs, Something Got You Baby and Let The Good Times Roll, but these were unconvincing, and a country cover version of the mid 50s hit A Tear Fell did not work either. The Hollies were also searching for a new direction, having realised that Merseybeat was no more. Their self titled LP contained Rock n Roll covers and they moved in the direction of US soul with the Miracles Mickey's Monkey and Curtis Mayfield's You Must Believe Me. Catch Us If You Can was the film the Dave Clark Five were hoping would be their equivalent of A Hard Days Night. The group, unlike the Beatles however, did not play themselves in the film, but a group of extras and stuntmen making a TV commercial and disillusioned with the whole process, decide to abscond to a deserted island off the coast of Devon, encountering on the way, a group of hippies squatting on Salisbury Plain and a middle aged couple played by Robin Bailey and Yootha Joyce, all the while being chased by the establishment, even the police.


What seemed to be a genre with longer lasting potential was the rhythm and blues sound of The Rolling Stones. The Animals hit no.6 for the second time with their second album Animal Tracks, Manfred Mann's second album Mann Made hit no.7 and there was a new group in this genre, but The Pretty Things with just one top 10 album and one top 10 single never did live up to their fan base and initial promise.


Animal Tracks has a couple of filler tracks, yet another version of Let The Good Times Roll and the opening track, Mess Around that is just that, The Animals jamming and having fun, but is mainly a well put together R&B LP including the songs How You've Changed, Hallelujah I Lover Her So, Bright Lights Big City and Worried Life Blues, highlighted by Alan Price's organ playing, just before he departed the band. Manfred Mann was also already on the point of breaking up the original line up and Mann Made is a more soulful LP than their debut Five Faces Of Manfred Mann including the tracks Since I Don't Have You, Stormy Monday, The Way You Do The Things You Do and You Don't Know Me. It also features the novelty hit Hi Lili Hi Lo which Alan Price would take into the singles chart a year later. The Pretty Things, Dick Taylor, Phil May, Brian Pendleton, John Stax and Viv Prince, all born in Kent were never as big in the charts as their fanbase would have suggested. They performed blues rock as played by Bo Diddley and Jimmy Reed and were compared in the press to The Rolling Stones. Never happy with playing one genre, they moved onto what became known as Garage rock and a Mod lifestyle, competing more with The Who than the Rolling Stones and even recorded a rock opera, SF Sorrow, a year before the Who released Tommy. Their debut self titled LP was a hard rockin' tribute to Bo Diddley who wrote four of tracks including Pretty Thing, from which the band took their name. Most of the album was recorded with the sound level in the red to give a deliberately distorted sound. There were also a couple of Chuck Berry numbers and several self penned songs, 13 Chester Street, Unknown Blues and I Can Never Say along with all three of their hit singles to date, Rosalyn, Don't Bring Me Down and Honey I Need.


Two girls who had enjoyed number one singles in 1964, broke through to the album charts this year both titling their debut albums by their first names, Sandie Shaw's Sandie peaking at no.3 and Cilla Black's Cilla at no.5. On her second album was Dusty Springfield with Everything's Coming Up Dusty which peaked at no.6 as her debut had done the previous year and did not include any of her hits but was a more mature soulful LP featuring songs by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley, Who Can I Turn To from the musical The Roar Of The Greasepaint, Goffin & King's I Can't Hear You and Oh No Not My Baby, Rod Argent's If It Don't Work Out, Randy Newman's I've Been Wrong Before and even a version of the traditional Latin number La Bamba.


Sandie Shaw was born Sandra Ann Goodrich in Dagenham in 1947 and began working at the Ford works before being discovered by Adam Faith and was described as a working class It girl notable for her gimmick of always appearing barefoot. Adam Faith introduced her to his manager Eve Taylor who heard a minor hit written by Bacharach and David, There's Always Something There To Remind Me whilst in America and it became a number one single for Sandie. Chris Andrews was brought in and wrote a string of pop hits for her including Girl Don't Come, I'll Stop At Nothing, Message Understood and her second number one Long Live Love, none of which appear on the LP Sandie. There are four other Chris Andrews tracks on the album, Gotta See My Baby Everyday, Stop Feeling Sorry For Yourself, Don't Be That Way and Talk About Love while the other eight tracks are all cover versions of recent hits for girl singers such as Love Letters, It's In His Kiss, Downtown and Everybody Loves A Lover.


Cilla Black was the only female singer of note to emerge from Brian Epstein's stable of Merseyside artists and she followed her singing career with a second career in television, hosting her own variety show and game shows. She was born Priscilla White in Liverpool in 1943 and was working in the cloakroom at the Cavern Club. She began as an ordinary, average girl next door but Epstein and producer, George Martin were convinced that she would succeed with the right song. During 1964 she recorded two of them as both Anyone Who Had A Heart and You're My World became number one hits, both powerful ballads that could have been recorded, and possibly better, by Dusty Springfield, but it was Cilla who was given the songs and these began a string of hit singles lasting into the 1970s, becoming, after the Beatles, the second best selling artist to emerge from Liverpool during the 1960s. Her debut LP as was the custom at the time, did not include any of the hit singles but was filled with cover versions of songs as diverse as Goin Out Of My Head, Baby It's You, Dancing In The Street, Love Letters (again) and Ol Man River. There was also space on the LP to showcase Cilla singing numbers written by American songwriters, I'm Not Alone Anymore, Whatcha Gonna Do About It, a hit later in the year for the Small Faces and Cole Porter's You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To.


After three years of soundtrack to his films, foreign language albums and greatest hits compilations, Cliff Richard released a new album, rather unimaginatively titled Cliff Richard which reached no.9. Elvis Presley however was still only releasing soundtracks and compilations, Elvis For Everyone reaching no.8 and the soundtrack to the film Girl Happy peaked at no.7 but for the first time ever, his two 1965 soundtracks failed to reach the album chart top 10, Roustabout stopping at no.12 and Flaming Star and Summer Kisses at no.11.


Cliff Richard borrowed some songs from When In Spain, English language versions of Perfidia, Te Quiero Dijeste-Magic Is The Moonlight, Quien Sera-Sway and Tus Besos-Kiss and attempted to recreate his Rock n Roll days with Razzle Dazzle and Reelin and Rockin. He also swings on I Don't Want To Love You, but by now Cliff was a fully fledged family entertainer, no longer really a pop star. Elvis Presley had fallen far from grace and only his name carried albums into the top 10. Elvis For Everyone was an LP with leftover tracks gathered together by RCA, dating back to 1954, varying in style from country, Hank Williams' Your Cheatin Heart, Rock n Roll, Chuck Berry's Memphis Tennessee, Hawaiian Santa Lucia and nine other tracks that may have been better off remaining as leftovers. The soundtrack to Girl Happy is equally forgettable, Elvis playing Rusty Wells, a singer who is hired to watch over Shelley Fabares as she takes her first holiday. The only hit on the album was Do The Clam which reached a miserable no.19. However, both Cliff and Elvis still both managed to achieve number one singles during 1965, The Minute You're Gone and Crying In The Chapel respectively.


The Shadows hit no.4 with their fifth album Sound Of The Shadows, The Kinks, hit no.3 with Kinda Kinks as they had with their debut album the previous year. The Sound Of The Shadows shows the group attempting to be a mainstream Rock n Roll band as well as Cliff Richard's backing boys on his increasingly MOR albums. They harmonize using vocals on A Little Bitty Tear, Let It Be Me and Five Hundred Miles as well as playing their standard guitar instrumental ballads, Blue Sky Blue Sea Blue Me and Santa Ana and harder rocking guitar numbers, Bossa Roo, Dean's Theme and Breakthru. The Kinks second LP, Kinda Kinks features mostly Ray Davies composed songs, Look For Me Baby, Got My Feet On The Ground, Wonder Where My Baby Is Tonight, Don't Ever Change, So Long, You Shouldn't Be Sad and a second number one hit Tired Of Waiting For You.


Just as the US charts had seen a posthumous album of speeches by JF Kennedy, so the British charts saw an entry into the top 10 by Sir Winston Churchill titled The Voice Of Churchill which was an LP of his most famous speeches, most of which were made during the second world war and hit the top 10 just one month after his death in January.


Apart from the pop artists starring in their own films, the only new soundtrack in the top 10 was My Fair Lady, the Broadway cast recording having spent 19 weeks at no.1 seven years ago and it was the final appearance in the top 10 for West Side Story. The soundtrack to My Fair Lady is now more famous for not featuring Julie Andrews in the lead role. Having been the star of two of the biggest films and albums of 1965, she was deemed not to be a big enough star to carry the film version of Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe's musical, based on George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion, about the relationship between an English language expert and a common flower girl. Instead the role of Eliza Doolittle went to Audrey Hepburn, although the singing part was dubbed by Marni Nixon. Both Rex Harrison and Stanley Holloway reprised their roles from the original stage cast recording and perhaps this was why the film soundtrack version LP only reached no.9.


Coming off the back of number one singles, The Seekers charted with World Of Our Own, as did Roy Orbison with Oh Pretty Woman and There Is Only One Roy Orbison, and Sonny & Cher hit no.7 with Look At Us, as did Cher with her solo album All I Really Want To Do. However Georgie Fame could only reach no.15 in the album charts after a number one single and Tom Jones reached no.11 with his debut album, but there were no chart entries at all for the Righteous Brothers, Unit 4+2, Roger Miller, Jackie Trent and somewhat surprisingly, considering their album success in later years, The Moody Blues.


The Seekers were formed in Australia by Athol Guy, Keith Potger and Bruce Woodley who had all attended the Melbourne boys school, but it was when they added vocalist Judith Durham to their lineup that the band's fortune took off. Getting work on board a cruise ship headed for London, they sent some advance copies of their recordings to EMI records. Their agent, Eddie Jarratt brought them to the attention of Tom Springfield, who saw the Seekers as similar to his band the Springfields before Dusty left for a solo career, but even better and their first single, I'll Never Find Another You was a number one hit. The debut album, The Seekers, did not chart, but the second LP opened with their next hit, A World Of Our Own and included two Bob Dylan songs, Don't Think Twice It's Alright and The Times They Are A Changin, as well as four Tom Springfield songs This Land Is Your Land, Allentown Jail, Just A Closer Walk With Thee and You Can Tell The World.


Roy Orbison's Oh Pretty Woman opened with the number one title track and included his other number one single from 1964, It's Over as well as Borne On The Wind, Mean Woman Blues, Falling and Dream Baby. There is only one Roy Orbison did not feature any hit singles and was his final top 10 album until the greatest hits in the 70s and his comeback in the late 1980s. It did include his own songs Ride Away, You Fool You, I'm In A Blue Blue Mood, If You Can't Say Something Nice, Sugar And Honey, Wondering and his own original version of the Everly Brothers hit Claudette.


Salvatore Sonny Bono and Cherilyn Lapierre Sarkisian, originally known as Caesar and Cleo but better known as husband and wife duo Sonny & Cher had a chart career in the mid 1960s as a duo and both individually as solo artists but it was Cher who would continue having hits into the 2000s, while Sonny would go into politics until his death. Until the hit, I Got You Babe and its accompanying video, it was difficult to tell their voices apart, but that was part of the novelty. Sonny was already a successful songwriter in the style of Phil Spector and their second LP, Look At Us sounds as if it could have been produced by Spector and includes versions of Unchained Melody, Then He Kissed Me and Why Don't They Let Us Fall In Love as well as the worldwide hit single I Got You Babe.


Cher's solo recordings followed shortly afterwards and Liberty records decided that as a solo artist, she should distance herself from the pop of Sonny & Cher and make an LP of folk rock but it didn't really work, apart from the title track, All I Really Want To Do, rivalling the Byrds version, they gave her cover versions of Bob Dylan's Don't Think Twice and Blowin In The Wind, hits for other female vocalists this year, Girl Don't Come and Come And Stay With Me and versions of I Go To Sleep, Needles And Pins and Dream Baby.


Capitol records in the US continued their policy of changing tracks and choosing their own for Beatles releases in America. The albums Beatles 65 and Beatles VI both reaching no.1. Hermans Hermits hit no 2 with both Introducing Hermans Hermits and Hermans Hermits On Tour, neither of which were released in this form in the UK. The soundtrack to Goldfinger reached no.1 as did Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass with Whipped Cream and Other Delights who had yet to chart an album in the UK. Other major US albums failing to chart in the UK included the Supremes Where Did Our Love Go, Barbra Streisand's My Name is Barbra, Ramsey Lewis Trio's In Crowd and the comedy album Welcome To The LBJ Ranch.
