Over 300,000 flock to Albert Park

The enduring popularity of the Australian Grand Prix saw well over a quarter of a million race fans head to Melbourne at the weekend for the opening round of the 2007 FIA Formula One World Championship.

More than 47,000 passed through the gates on Thursday, and that was before the Formula One action had even begun. Friday’s newly-extended 90-minute practice sessions proved a hit, drawing 72,500 spectators to the temporary street circuit.

A further 76,000 were present to see Kimi Raikkonen score his first pole for Ferrari on Saturday, while on race day attendance was a huge 105,000, bringing the total for the Australian weekend to an impressive 301,000.

Fans invade the circuit.
