The District 15 State Police

District 15 in Downers Grove had its origin in 1958 and was first known as the Illinois State Police Tollway Battalion. Since that time District 15 has moved from its original headquarters in Oak Brook to Downers Grove, has expanded its area of responsibility to nearly 300 miles of predominantly metropolitan interstate and currently has a sworn headcount of approximately 150 officers. 13 Toll Authority employees are supplied to the district as support staff.

District 15 is frequently referred to as "unique" in comparison to the other 21 State Police Districts. This term is accurately applied in view of the district's dual reporting responsibilities to the Illinois State Police and the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority. All Department administrative and operational policies and procedures apply to the district while facility and budgeting issues emanate from the Toll Authority.

District 15's area of responsibility includes 1,581 lane miles of interstate, spans 12 counties and traverses five other State Police Districts. While contractual obligations to the Toll Authority focus the district's activities upon policing the Tollway, the district frequently assists both adjacent districts and other criminal justice agencies in meeting their responsibilities.
