Personal Tutors PDF Print

When you start your programme you will be given the name of your Personal Tutor, who will be someone who teaches you for part of your programme.

Your Personal Tutor has a number of responsibilities but basically she/he is there to help you to succeed on your chosen programme of study.

Your Personal Tutor is responsible for your regular tutorial sessions.  These will be one-to-one, small groups or the whole group.  Sometimes a group approach to an issue can help far more than just one person's point of view.  You will have access to at least one individual tutorial session per term.

Your Personal Tutor will take an overview of your progress and achievement whilst at College.  She/he will usually be responsible for writing progress reports and references for employment or further/higher education.

For part-time students their Personal Tutor will normally be their subject tutor.  Part-time students will be entitled to one tutorial session per term to review progress.  Subject tutors will also ensure that the student is referred to support services as appropriate, for example for Careers Guidance or progression opportunities.

Throughout your time at College you may need to consult your Personal Tutor about different issues:

  • Your work and progress
  • Assessments
  • Learning resources
  • Things you are pleased/unhappy with
  • Advice on what to do next
  • Working with different groups
  • Outside factors (e.g. homes, friends, finance)
  • Other support services, College regulations/procedures

Your Personal Tutor will do her/his best to support you.  At times she/he may need to refer you to another source of help.  The College has many staff with a great deal of experience and expertise.  We are sure that, whatever your concern, we will be able to offer constructive advice.

To get the most from your tutorials you need to:

  • Review work you have done
  • Look at what is happening around you
  • Think carefully about what you want to achieve
  • Talk!
  • Listen!
  • Think again
  • Plan ahead

Good luck, and remember- we are here to help you help yourself.
