The BAD BRAINS are back with a vengeance, after a 10-year recording absence! We at Reckless are just as cynical as the next guy about old punk bands reuniting, but the Bad Brains are one of those rare bands that can pull it off. Even though they're all pushing 50, they sound as if they walked out of a cryogenic chamber with their youth and chops intact. They sound just as wild and fearsome as ever, and with Beastie Boy Adam Yauch on production duties, it maintains the old-school sound, with a few new interesting flourishes. This stuff is just brutal, with the exception of the more traditionally reggae-flavored numbers. GREAT TO HAVE THEM BACK!!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

After the runaway success of THE RACONTEURS, there were rumblings that THE WHITE STRIPES were on permanent hiatus, but they've come charging back with a huge HUGE record. Despite the faux-Nudie suits, there's not much country to be had (maybe some neo-80's style), but they more than make up for the absence with a gigantic guitar pallette, paving the way for arena rock conquest. That's a good thing. And guess what? NO MORE MARIMBA! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

JENNIFER GENTLE was an Italian psychedelic pop group but only one member remains & he has kept the name. Marco Fasolo was the major force behind the band & it's apparent right away upon listening to "Midnight Room." Drawing heavy influence from early PINK FLOYD & SYD BARRETT solo work, Fasolo creates a bizarre world of post-BEATLES, 'creepy-carnival' sounding psych. There are definitely elements of Italian psych & prog to be found here but the influence of Syd can be found on almost every track & it works nicely for the songs. There aren't many contemporary comparisons to make except for maybe GRIS GIRS, but if you like freaked out acid rock of any kind the you should give this a try.

FRIDGE has sort of taken a back seat to one of their members other projects over the past few years, a little group that you have heard of featuring Kieran Hebden called FOUR TET. The time off seems to have been positive for the band, their 2007 album "The Sun" has a fresh sound & the band seems reinvigorated. Hebden's experiences with FOUR TET & jazz drummer Steve Reid have definitely influenced the new direction for FRIDGE. Heavy drums with a lot of auxiliary percussion & sparse electronics over driving post-rock riffs. For fans of TORTOISE, FOUR TET, REMINDER etc..

2007 reissue of this amazing collaboration between MADLIB and the late J DILLA. The first of two discs has the original album plus two bonus tracks, while the second disc has instrumentals for the entire album plus nine more bonus tracks! DILLA and MADLIB trade off production and the rhymes, but keep things bumpin' for the duration of the disc. Although it may be surprising from MADLIB, there's a few cuts on here that are certifiable club bangers. Seriously. "Champion Sound" also features guest spots from FRANK N DANK, TALIB KWELI, PERCEE P, & GUILTY SIMPSON. A modern classic . . . get this!!!

I don't want to say for sure but this may be the first XASTHUR track (at least since the very early stuff) with real drums. This track is even more bleak than the stuff on the most recent album "Subliminal Genocide." The STRIBORG track could almost be considered a 'noise' track. The recording is really blown out and the guitars dominate the sparse drums and vocals. Both of these songs are exclusive to this limited edition 7".

Allegedly, named after TODD TRAINER's (drums) dog, 2007's "Excellent Italian Greyhound" is SHELLAC's first release since "1000 Hurts." Spitting political venom, hurling tracks full of metallic guitar tones, and hammering out well-textured drum patterns makes this a classic SHELLAC album. In addition to the lively musical collection, the slipcover is designed by none other than Chicago's own JAY RYAN. One could desire this release to be lengthier, however, this is an extremely concentrated aural escapade. SUGGESTED & RECOMMENDED, to keep with the Italian theme, SUGGERITO!!!

THIS RECORD IS INSANE!!! I don't know what the mission statement of this band is, but if it's "play brutal no wave free jazz with the intensity of hardcore", then they've succeeded and then some! This supergroup consists of SONIC YOUTH members THURSTON MOORE, JIM O'ROURKE, sax mangler MATS GUSTAFSSON, TERRIE EX (of THE EX), MASSIMO PUPILLO and PAAL NILSSEN-LOVE. Impressive line-up, but this thing really exceeds the sum of it's parts. This is challenging music at it's most blistering and expressive, going beyond a mere noise wash, into exploratory, searching new vistas. HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

DAOUDA DEMBELE is from west Africa, from near the small town of Segou. He tells us one long story, while playing a trancelike melody on a stringed instrument called the jelingoni. The album is hypnotic and captivating and should not be missed by anyone seriously interested in world music. EXCELLENT!!!

PEKOS and YORO DIALLO are two musicians reportedly from Wasulu. The music is nearly indescribable. A hypnotic, feedback-laden strumming coming from a gourd of ngonis (with a mic inside), topped off with glorious, mighty singing conveying a real feeling of strength and power. This has a more intimate feel than, say, KONONO No. 1. I highly implore you to check this out. EXCELLENT!!!

ESPERS' Meg Baird has delivered an absolutely stunning, timeless solo album that will stop you dead in your tracks, with its perfection. This sounds like it could have been made at any time, it doesn't smack of any certain era. Rather, it comes from within. If comparisons must be made, we could mention VASHTI BUNYAN, but that would really do an injustice to this album, which doesn't deserve to be compared to anything. The beauty is inherent from start to finish, evoking the British Isles and the Appalachians. It really is THAT GOOD. ESSENTIAL!!!

Chicago's much loved rhythmic monsters, THE WATCHERS return in 2007 with the highly anticipated "Vampire Driver." The album begins with some pounding drums & quickly moves into some danceable post-punk ala "Solid Gold" era GANG OF FOUR. Most of the songs are pretty short & sweet without a trace of filler. It seems like the band has really managed to capture the excitement of their live show on this recording, especially their extremely rocking & tight rhythm section. Fans of the GANG OF FOUR, ESG, THE ETERNALS, TALKING HEADS etc... should really pick this up. AMAZING STUFF.

SHaking off the more experimental vibe WILCO adapted on 2004's "A Ghost Is Born," these Chicago natives have returned to their country roots with "Sky Blue Sky." A twangy effort that really showcases the band's ability to write catchy (but unconventional) pop tunes, "Sky Blue Sky" is vintage WILCO. TWEEDT and Co. keep the instrumentation simple with you standard drums, guitar, & bass, throwing in some organ, lap steel, & piano here and there. You know this is RECOMMENDED!!!
