Fireside Footies

February 24th, 2007

Materials used
Handspun, apx 12-14 WPI, 4 oz (3.7 used here, to be exact) & 240 yards
Noro Kureyon 2 balls

US size 10 DPNs
Tapestry needle

Gauge (tho not overly important, as you can see I wound up with two pair of slippers the same size, using different yarns. Note: the handspun slippers shrunk faster and tighter than the Noro slippers)
Handspun 4 st & 5 rows = 1 inch
Noro Kureyon 3.5 st & 4.47 rows = 1 inch
Finished measurements:
Pre fulling:11.5 inches long from toe to heel
Post fulling 7.5 inches long from toe to heel

CO 48 st. divide among 3 needles
Join, being careful not to twist work.
Knit 4 rounds

Divide st in half
Place 24 st on one needle, and 12 on the other two.
Work the needle with the 24 stitches in a slip stitch.
R 1: sl 1 p 23
R 2: *sl 1 k1* Repeat till end

work R 1&2 for 12 rows

Turn Heel
R1: S1 P16 P2tog P1
R2: S1 K11 K2tog K1
R3: S1 P to one stitch before the break (the last turn) P2tog, P1
R3: S1 K to one stitch before the break (the last turn) K2tog, K1
work rows 3 & 4 for 7 more rows (until no st remain to be worked)
(14 st should remain)
PU & K 12 st
Knit 24 across the top
PU & knit 12

Place 7 of the heel st on right needle and 7 on the left.

Mark this as the beginning of round.

Needle 1 - 19 sts
Needle 2 (top of foot) 24 sts
Needle 3 - 19 sts

Knit to 3 sts of the end of needle 1, K2tog, k1
Knit over needle 2
Needle 3, K1, S1, K1, PSSO

Decrease in this manner every other row for 14 rounds or until 48 st remain.
(12 right needle, 24 middle 12 left)

Continue working in the round for apx. 8 inches
Note: A good rule of thumb for felted (fulled) work, is the object will shrink 1/3 in size.
My decreases worked out to be 3 inches, which conveniently happens to be 1/3 my total foot size. Therefore, I worked the slipper until It reached the top of my toes.

Toe decreases.
R 1 K1 S1 K1 PSSO
K 18
K2tog K1

K1 K2tog

K18, S1, K1 PSSO

R2 K

Continue decreasing in this manner until 20 st remain, or work measures foot size + 1/3

Graft with kitchener st. draw yarn thru, weave in ends.
Place inside a pillow case/laundry bag and toss in washing machine on Hot! with soap. (And perhaps a few articles to increase agitation .)

YAY!!!! I looked all over the net for these footies, trying to find something even close that I liked as much. I’m SO glad you posted this pattern - if I’m feeling up to knitting tomorrow (fever, tummy ickiness, yuck!) I’m SO starting these tomorrow! I have the Noro earmarked!

Ok, I’m probably a total ‘tard, but I am having a problem with turning the heel. I have the 24 stitches, I do the 4 rows of the short row, but I somehow end up only working a total of 4 rows of 3 & 4, not 7 rows, and I end up with 17 stitches instead of 14! When you P and K2tog, you’re basically joining up the hole left from the turn, right? Like, I’m purling the stitch before the gap together with the stitch after the gap, right? I’m so totally confused as to why this isn’t working for me - I’ve done short row heels before!

    Pippi says:

It sounds like you are K&P 13 rather than 11.
