Teams of rescuers struggled to clear fallen rock from tunnels today, trying to reach six coal miners trapped by a cave-in more than 1,500 feet below the surface. With no word on whether the six were still alive, crews worked through the night in shifts, with teams coming and going along the road leading to the Crandall Canyon mine in a forested canyon.

The list of people suspected of receiving a dead teacher's pension for the past 20 years has been narrowed to one: the teacher's son. In a lawsuit amended late last week, the Omaha school district alleges that Peter R. Brinker of Omaha fraudulently received more than $123,000 in retirement benefits after the 1988 death of his mother, Winifred P. Brinker.
Asked if, on paper, this would be considered his best NU team, Bill Callahan carefully said: "I don't know yet." Not exactly four words to plant fear into the rest of the Big 12. "It's not a lack of confidence, believe me," Callahan said.
