June 21--Archbishop of Canterbury and Simpsons fan Rowan Williams may be about to follow in Tom Jones's footsteps with a guest appearance on the top American cartoon show.

Producers Twentieth Century Fox are set to approach the Welsh primate with an offer to star in 'The Simpsons' after he praised the show in an interview.

Dr. Williams said he notices similarities between himself and Homer.

Executive Producer and chief writer Al Jean said he was flattered to number the Archbishop among the show's fans.

He said: "We'd love to have him on the show if he doesn't mind Comic Book Guy calling him the 'worst archbishop ever.'

"A true fan will understand the humor in that, because Comic Book Guy is the most cynical character in the show.

"It's a great thrill that the archbishop is such a fan."

In an interview for My Favorite Hymns, to be aired on ITV1 next Sunday, Swansea-born Dr. Williams said he "fell for" the Simpsons seven years ago.

He said: "It works at so many levels. It's generally on the side of the angels. It punctures lots of pompous fictions about how the world works."

Asked if he saw himself in Homer Simpson, he replied: "Homer is the average human creature liable to self-delusion and somehow by the grace of God, or something like that, surviving. So yes, there is an element of that."

Dr. Williams is not be the first Welsh guest star of note to appear on The Simpsons.

In series six, a restrained Anthony Hopkins is wheeled in like Hannibal Lecter to audition for the part of Mr. Burns.

In 1992, Mr. Burns hired Tom Jones to serenade Marge when the power plant owner falls madly in love with her.
