Injuries have hampered Gael over the past two seasons but, when fit, there is no doubt that he is one of Europe's most exciting young full backs.
The French defender deputised for Ashley Cole in six consecutive games last term after the England international suffered a stress fracture to his foot. Unfortunately for Gael, he sustained an identical injury on November 11 while in action for France Under-21s.
Gael battled his way back to fitness and was thrown in at the deep end when Mathieu Flamini limped off in the early stages of the Champions League Semi-Final second leg in Villarreal. Gael came through that test but has been out since then with another injury problem.
Gael's pace, distribution and overlapping ability gives Arsenal strength in depth on the left and he remains a real prospect for the future. Better luck with injuries will give him the chance to demonstrate that this season.
Gael was absent for all of September as he continued his recovery from a foot injury.
Gael missed the entire month through injury.
Gael began May with a start at Sunderland before sitting out the final two Premiership fixtures of the camapign against Manchester City and Wigan. The French full back completed his campaign as an unused substitute in the Champions League Final.
Gael completed his comeback from the foot injury which had sidelined him since November. The full-back played the entire 90 minutes in a behind-closed-doors game against Coventry reserves before being thrust into the action at El Madrigal. Gael replaced the injured Mathieu Flamini after nine minutes and put in an impressive performance at left back.
