Sixth Veera Rani Abbakka Utsav concludes

FELICITATION: Deputy Chief Minister M.P. Prakash conferring the Veera Rani Abbakka Prashasti on traditional medicine expert Honnamma of Mulki, who is 108 years old, at the Veera Rani Abbakka Utsav held at Thokkuttu in Ullal on Sunday.

ULLAL: Deputy Chief Minister M.P. Prakash has called for a rejuvenation of cultural documentation and historical research particularly of small places. He was speaking at the valedictory of the 6th Veera Rani Abbakka Utsav here on Sunday.

Mr. Prakash said funding for local utsavs that have regional importance need to be coordinated by the local organising committees, the Government and bodies such as the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR). He said he is pained that despite the best efforts of the local committee of the Veera Rani Abbakka the expected result has not been achieved owing to several factors. It is better for committees to have a direct liaison with the Government, he added.

He said the district administration which organises the Karavali Utsav every year should make efforts to give meaningful form to the Rani Abbakka Utsav. Speaking about historical events, Mr. Prakash said Indian history has shining examples of lady warriors such as Abbakka of Ullal, Kittur Rani Chennamma, Jhansi Rani Laxmibai and Keladi Chennamma who have spared no effort in saving the country's honour.

He said highlighting the achievements of local historical figures and preserving their honour is everybody's duty.

He appreciated the spirit with which people of Ullal have honoured the legacy of Veera Rani Abbakka. On this occasion Mr. Prakash also conferred Veer Rani Abbakka Prashasti on Tulu poetess and writer Pramoda Suvarna and Veera Rani Abbakka Puraskar on traditional medicine expert -the 108 year old Honnamma of Mulky. Special recognition felicitations were also conferred on Chairman of the Kannada Development Authority B.M. Idinabba.

The organising committee has appealed to the Deputy Chief Minister to name a train from Mangalore to New Delhi after Rani Abbakka.
