With a shared commitment to peace, the United States and the Republic of Korea have worked together
to maintain the stability of a complex region for over half a century. Under this durable relationship,
Korea has emerged as an open, democratic society and the world’s 12th largest economic
power. It’s a leader in everything from automobiles to advanced digital electronics.
President Roh Moo-hyun, who rose from humble circumstances, personifies the hopes and realities
of Korea’s vibrant democracy. A moderate and pragmatic leader, the new President is seen by
most Koreans as the "choice of hope."
As the new leader of Korea, President Roh may not be widely known in this country, but
his roots are easily recognizable. Like Abraham Lincoln, for whom he has a deep admiration, President Roh
overcame hardship to become a self-educated attorney and a popularly elected leader. His life experience has
fueled a passion for human rights and established an administration that serves the people.
North Korea’s development of nuclear weapons is the most burning issue facing the U.S. and
Korea. President Roh has urged the North to abandon its nuclear program, while stressing that
negotiations are the best way to resolve the issue. He feels he would be uniquely qualified to help find
a peaceful, lasting resolution and desires to play a role in that process.
