Using your Oyster card on some National Rail services:

When you are using Oyster to pay as you go you must touch in at the start and touch out at the end of your journey.

If you use pay as you go on the above National Rail services, an Entry Charge of up to £5 will be deducted from your Oyster card when you touch in at the start of your journey. When you touch out at the end of your journey, the charge will be adjusted so that you only pay the advertised Oyster single fare for the journey.

If you do not touch in and out correctly the charge is not adjusted and you lose the benefit of cheaper Oyster fares.

When using pay as you go at stations where there are no ticket gates, you must use the validators provided. If you do not, you will be charged a maximum cash fare.

Some National Rail stations issue Oyster cards and can renew tickets and top-up travel value to pay as you go.
