Brabham presses home his claim on the title

Jack Brabham takes the flag Brabham arrived in Aintree intending to run a streamlined Cooper and even practised in the strange-looking machine. However it soon transpired that the aerodynamic advantage simply wasn't there on the straights, where it mattered the most. As a result he reverted to a standard body Cooper T51 and promptly dumped the car on pole, a fraction ahead of Salvadori in an Aston DBR4.

The race evolved into a battle between Brabham and McLaren in the Coopers and Moss and Schell driving for BRM. While the heavier BRMs were forced to pit for new tyres the lightweight Coopers were able to run without stopping and in the end that gave them two of the three podium spots.

Schell took fourth and with Trintignant in fifth resulting in all the points going to Cooper and BRM. Salvadori ran a great race and brought the heavyweight Aston Martin home in a creditable sixth place.

The winning car - Cooper T51
