WELCOME TO Issue No. 4 of the ICPD+5 News Bulletin on UNFPA-organized activities relating to the five-year review of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD). The News Bulletin is a feature produced on the first Monday of every month for all partners interested in the activities and events leading up to The Hague Forum on ICPD implementation on 8-12 February, 1999; and the General Assembly Special Session on the review and appraisal of the implementation of the ICPD Programme of Action in New York on 30 June-2 July, 1999. RECENT MEETINGS

14-17 April: A round table on Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights was held at the Ford Foundation in New York. The final report from that meeting, entitled "Report of the Round Table on Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights: Key Future Actions," is posted on the UNFPA ICPD+5 web page. The report contains key future actions for the further implementation of the Programme of Action in this area. 13-14 May: The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and UNFPA held a regional review on the ICPD in Aruba. The ECLAC Ad Hoc Committee on Population and Development adopted a resolution on ICPD+5, entitled "Population and development: Preparations for the regional appraisal of the implementation of the Programme of Action of the ICPD." Copies of the draft report of the meeting will be available through the ECLAC office in Santiago, Chile. ECLAC telephone and fax numbers are, respectively: (56-2) 210-2000; (56-2) 208-0252. 22-25 June: A round table meeting on Reproductive Rights and Implementation of Reproductive Health Programmes, Women’s Empowerment, Male Involvement and Human Rights took place in Kampala, Uganda. The meeting agenda and participants’ list, news reports, and background documents for the meeting are posted on the ICPD+5 web page. The final report of the meeting, which includes key future actions in this area, will be posted on the ICPD+5 web page and will be available through UNFPA by end-August.

29 June-3 July: A Technical Symposium on International Migration and Development was held in The Hague. The meeting of technical experts was an activity of the Working Group on International Migration of the Task Force on Basic Social Services for All, a U.N. inter-agency body.

27-30 July: A round table on Participation with Civil Society in the Implementation of the Programme of Action was held in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The agenda, participants’ list and background document for the round table will be available on the UNFPA ICPD+5 web page. News reports on the meeting and its outcome are posted on the UNFPA ICPD+5 web page at: http://www.unfpa.org/ICPD/meetings.htm.

UPCOMING MEETINGS

21-25 September (Tentative): The Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) will meet in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to review the ICPD Programme of Action.

22-25 September: The Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA); UNFPA and the League of Arab States will meet in Beirut to review the ICPD Programme of Action. The meeting is expected to adopt a declaration which will be further endorsed at a high-level ministerial meeting of the League of Arab States in Cairo in November. 6-9 October: A technical meeting on Population and Ageing will take place in Brussels, Belgium. Information on the meeting will be available on the ICPD+5 web page at a later date.

2-6 November: A Symposium on Population Change and Economic Development will take place in Bellagio, Italy. Information on the meeting will be available on the ICPD+5 web site at a later date.

7-9 December: The Economic Commission for Europe and UNFPA will meet in Budapest, Hungary, to review the ICPD Programme of Action. NEW WEB SITES FOR ICPD+5 INFORMATION

The Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) has created a new web site for information relating to ICPD+5. The web site can be accessed at: http://www.unescap.org/pop/icpd/icpd.htm. Posted on the site are the Report and Key Future Actions Required to Achieve the Goals of the ICPD Programme of Action and Bali Declaration; and a related resolution adopted by the 54th session of the ESCAP Commission at its 24-27 March 1998 meeting in Bangkok, Thailand.

PRE-HAGUE FORUM EVENTS

An NGO Forum on ICPD+5 will be held on 6-7 February, just prior to the 8-12 February, 1999 Hague Forum. A global parliamentarians’ meeting is scheduled to take place in The Hague, tentatively on 6-7 February 1999. The NGO Forum will take place at the same site as The Hague Forum: The Netherlands Congress Centre, Churchillplein 10, P.O. Box 82000, 2508 EA, The Hague, The Netherlands. Information on the organization of the NGO Forum will be available in early September 1998 on the Forum organizer’s NGO Forum web site at: http://www.wpf.org/ngoforum/. The World Population Foundation (WPF), a Dutch NGO, is the local facilitator for organizations interested in participating in the NGO Forum.
