Jeremy Cornish Signs for the Steelers

Sheffield Steelers have completed their roster for the 2007-08 bmibaby Elite league season with the signing of 6’3” heavyweight Jeremy Cornish.

Cornish has played the last 4 seasons in the Britain playing 2 years each with London and Newcastle, with whom he helped win the 2006 Elite League Play Off Championship.

Steelers coach David Matsos confirmed the signing by saying “we needed toughness and they come no tougher than Jeremy Cornish, we have a player here who knows his role, will be happy playing that role and a man who enjoys the job of a policeman, a protector, an enforcer.

”I am a great believer in the mechanics of a club, I believe that we have covered all other aspects of the team, we have great speed, we have great goal scorers, we have a better defence, we have a super goalie but we needed some toughness, in fact we needed super toughness and Jeremy fits that bill

”I wanted a man who knew his role before he arrived here, a player who would be happy filling that role. Speaking to Jeremy I know how keen he is to succeed here, I know he will come here looking to make a point, looking to be a fan favourite and looking after his team mates”

Matsos is right, speaking from his home in Canada Cornish couldn’t hide his delight “I am super excited to becoming to Sheffield, one of the real big clubs in Britain” he said “I have been speaking to David Matsos for weeks now and he has been honest with me over the role he wanted me to take

”I will work hard as a 3rd line winger, I will chip in with some goals but I except that I am there to look after my team mates, make sure that liberties are not taken with them, that isn’t a big deal for me as I have been doing that for several years, I enjoy the role, I’m good at it”

”I have no animosity after leaving Newcastle, I had 2 great years with them wining the play off championship. Rob Wilson was outstanding with me and I wish him and the Vipers well, as for Andre Payette he will get a beating first night out, I have already e-mailed him to tell him that”
