Pilots flying to and from Edmonton International Airport follow procedures to reduce aircraft noise over surrounding communities. For example, flights taking off to the southeast should not make a right turn until they have climbed east of heavily populated areas of the City of Leduc. Noisier aircraft are required to fly further east before they can make a right turn. All pilots and controllers are made aware of local noise-abatement rules.
Noise abatement regulations are reviewed by the Canadian Aviation Regulatory Advisory Council (CARAC) and approved by Transport Canada. Edmonton Airports has a noise advisory committee that can recommend noise abatement procedures. Members include residents of neighbouring municipalities and representatives of their elected councils.
