Nottm Forest 2-5 Yeovil
Yeovil win 4-5 on aggregate

Arron Davies' double sent Yeovil to the League One play-off final after a pulsating win over Nottingham Forest.

Davies fired past Paul Smith on 22 minutes following a slaloming run.

Scott Dobie equalised for Forest, who were then rocked by Alan Wright's own goal, Marcus Stewart's thumping header and a red card for David Prutton.

In extra-time Lee Morris' shot put Yeovil ahead on aggregate, before Gary Holt volleyed home for Forest, but Davies' cool finish proved decisive.

Yeovil had dominated much of the first semi-final despite losing 2-0 and that pattern repeated itself at the City Ground.

Davies' ability to move at pace with the ball was a joy to watch, while Stewart's intelligent play in attack posed Forest all sorts of problems.

606: DEBATE

If Yeovil troubled the Forest defence, Smith proved altogether more resilient, with the Forest goalkeeper making a series of top-class saves throughout the game.

Stewart could easily have had a hat-trick had it not been for Smith.

Yeovil's superior passing saw the visitors take an early grip on the game and Davies' wonderful goal was just reward for a positive start.

The Welshman picked up the ball just inside the Forest half and went on a run that took him to the edge of the penalty area.

As the Forest defenders backed off Davies proceeded to unleash a shot past Smith.

Just past the half-hour Smith made a remarkable double save, spreading his body to deny Morris and then getting up quickly to divert Stewart's shot over the bar.

It must have made agonising viewing for the Forest faithful, who had come to the City Ground in their droves for what they must have expected would be an easy passage to the final after their 2-0 semi-final first-leg win.

Dobie was one of the few Forest players to give the home fans something to cheer about, notably when he went close with a curling shot.

And two minutes after the restart it was Dobie that equalised with a downward header following a McGugan corner.

Smith continued to frustrate Yeovil, but he could only watch as substitute Jean-Paul Kalala's curling shot came back off the post and struck Wright before trickling over the line.

The goal made the score 2-1 to Yeovil, but the visiting team still trailed 3-2 on aggregate.

And Forest were within three minutes of Wembley when Stewart powered a header past Smith in the Forest goal to level the tie overall.

Forest found themselves a man down when substitute Prutton was sent off after picking up a second yellow card shortly before the tie went into extra-time.

Worse was to follow for Forest when Morris capitalised on Wes Morgan's awful error early in the first period of extra-time to put Yeovil ahead on aggregate for the first time in the two semi-finals.

But Yeovil only held their aggregate for lead for a minute as Holt guided a volley past Mildenhall.

In the second period of extra-time Forest, who had used all their substitutes, went effectively down to nine men due to an injury to Wright.

And Davies sealed Yeovil's remarkable win after exchanging passes with Morris, before shooting past Smith.

  • Nottingham Forest manager Colin Calderwood:
  • "The better side won. Tremendous credit to Yeovil because they put in an excellent perfomance, even though we had really bad game.

"I feel hugely deflated and disappointed. We've made poor decisions throughout the game and Yeovil were able to exploit that to the full."

  • Yeovil manager Russell Slade:
  • "The players have a belief in each other and a terrific spirit and that showed.

"We had a game plan - to be positive - and we did that throughout the match.

"It was a classic and a fantastic game to be part of it, but it was heart attack material as well."
