Arsenal Ladies Under 16's

Ladies Youth Development

Girls Development Sessions
Boreham Wood FC and Harvesters FC will once again be the veunes for our weekly development session for the upcoming 2007-08 season.  The sessions provide local girls the chance to experience football for the first time or simply give them the time and place to improve their skills with friends. The sessions will re-commence on the following dates below:

1) Harvester FC on Mondays from 4-5pm — Starts Monday 17th September 07 till 17th December 07
2) Boreham Wood FC on Wednesdays from 5-6pm — Starts Wednesday 19th September 07 till 19th December 07

Sessions are open for girls aged 7-14years and run during the school term time only and is only £1 in return for an hours of coaching and fun.  If you would like more information then please call us on 01727 747458 or 747452.

Islington Sports Partnership Girls Football sessions at Market Road
For girls aged 7-11 & 12-14years that live in Islington, Islington Sports partnership also run weekly girls only football skills sessions at Market Road during the school term time.

Under-16's report from Denmark
Congratulations to Arsenal Ladies Under 16's who gave a great account of themselves whilst competing in the first ever invitational European Cup Festival to be held in Denmark from 24th - 30th July.

Four groups of four teams competed for the unofficial title of European Champions.  The Danish organisers invited what they considered to be the strongest youth teams from Europe (which included teams from Germany, France, Sweden, Denmark, and Norway) therefore unsurprisingly the tournament was of a very high standard.

Arsenal were grouped in with Hammarby (Sweden), Hamburger (Germany) and Skovlunde (Denmark) and originally the young girls would have had to endure a gruelling schedule of three matches in three days. However Hamburger was unable to travel which fortunately meant they faced the Danish side on Tuesday, the Swedish side on Wednesday and a rest day on Thursday only to make it into the semi finals on Friday when they faced Malmo (Sweden).

A Jenny Chiumento free kick ensured we took the lead only to allow them to equalise in the dieing minutes therefore forcing the game into extra time and penalties.  The young England goalkeeper Becky Spencer was heroic by saving three penalties, with our girls coolly converting their penalties taking them into the final of its type.

With the injuries that three intense games in three days brings we knew were struggling in terms of availability of players after several picked up injuries.  Also we knew we were about to face one of the best sides in Sweden, and Sweden is one of the leading European nations in Women's football.  

Unfortunately a brave display could not combat the strength and depth that the Swedish side had and although we had greater possession in the second half, failed to score after they took a 1-0 lead confirming the girls finished as runners up.

Well done to all who took part after a very demanding week! Particular mention to Lizzie Wicks for being awarded player of the match in the final!
