The main purposes and functions of AFA are education and research. The following information will tell you how to prepare for the tests and furnish you with information to share with others.
For many years the American Federation of Astrologers has provided examinations for competency and awarded those who pass a certificate, suitably engraved, in honor of reaching this plateau. The recognition one attains by this feat is immediate and coveted; hence, standards are high and attainment is based upon the actual knowledge of the testee, rather than just his exposure to Astrology.
The candidate is not limited to any one system of mathematics, house cusp division, or school of study. The end result of study, however, must be accuracy in chart calculation and interpretation.
The exams are offered in natal Astrology at three levels of proficiency: student, professional, and teacher. Each of these is given a separate examination. You must take and pass the student exam before you may take either the professional or teacher, there are NO exceptions. A brief outline of what is expected follows:
STUDENT: A thorough and complete knowledge of how to set up a chart, mathematically correct, is a basic requirement. Your calculations, including rough notes, must be turned in with test papers at the conclusion of the exam. House cusps must be corrected. Your ephemeris and table of houses must contain degrees and minutes, as the planets and cusps must contain degrees and minutes. The lack of knowledge concerning these procedures is one of the major causes of failure, at least at the student level. There are several forms available to aid the student in learning house-cusp correction procedures. Check the AFA Product Price List for information. If you are unable to obtain local help in learning to construct the charts, call AFA for a referral or suggested books.
You will be asked to accurately calculate and interpret an actual horoscope using natal, progressions, transits, and declinations. The exam will contain questions concerning south latitude and east longitude house cusps. These are included to be sure that you can construct an accurate chart for any area of the world. You will have 8 hour to complete this exam.
PROFESSIONAL: The same basic requirements as for the student exam will be included. In addition you will be asked to show a more comprehensive ability in delineating the chart. This will entail a fuller, more intensive report on the events, as portrayed by the progressions and transits. Your ability to counsel for the situation portrayed will also be tested. You will have 8 hour to complete this exam.
TEACHER: The same knowledge required by the student and professional is necessary. However, much more emphasis is placed on theory: i.e., a working knowledge of other systems of chart calculation, various branches of the science, and understanding of the different house systems. You will have 8 hour to complete this exam.
The examinations are given in the Spring usually during April and then again in October. They are also given at our convention. If you are interested in taking the examination, the deadline for all applications is one month prior to the date of the exam. There will be NO exceptions. This is so that proper preparation can be made. Please fill out the form below and fax or mail in the application and waiver form; and return them with a check or money order. The fee for each examination is $25 for members and $50 for non-members. You can also complete the application on line.
Immediately following the close of the registration period, locations will be determined based on the people who register. We will contact those of you where we are unable to procure a monitor and give you a choice of either traveling to the nearest available area where the test will be conducted, or transferring your exam to another date. This is the ONLY time an application can be transferred to a different date.
Sample exams will be sent to all those taking a test, along with a letter telling you what to bring to the examination. These will be sent approximately two weeks prior to the test date. NO TEXTBOOKS, NOTES, or whatever are permitted.
All tests and materials turned in with your examination remain the property of the AFA. No exams will be returned. A letter will be sent advising you whether you have passed or failed the examination; furthermore, a brief summary of the examiner's comments will be included to guide you into needed areas of study. Results are usually sent within 90 days of the exam date.
Grading on all levels is based on the accuracy of the mathematical work and the correctness of the delineation. In this respect, the examiners evaluate your approach to the subject: i.e., the directness and logical step by step method used in interpretation. There are no "trick" questions or gimmicks included. We hope that you are equipped to pass the tests and use your knowledge to assist others.
Each test is designed to be eight hours in length, however testees have completed the tests in five or six hours. Carefully follow the test instructions and be prepared to list the ephemeris and house tables you use, if none were specified by AFA in your instructions sent before the exam.
Delineation answers must demonstrate knowledge of the root principles of signs, houses, and planets by illustrating your astrological premise with a written explanation. We suggest you state the aspect in question first and then explain it. The ability to recognize orbs is emphasized. We state for each exam the aspects and orbs required.
Good luck to you!
