BHP
BHP opened its Newcastle Steelworks in 1915, lifting Newcastle to the position of Australia's heavy industry centre. Since that time, the steel industry has been through many changes, the most recent being to phase out steel production in Newcastle in 1999. Newcastle has come a long way since 1915 and despite the closure of BHP, industries such as aluminum, coal and most recently tourism, have forged a bright future for the Hunter Region.
