Jim Morrison’s Death May Be Reinvestigated

morrisonIf you’re one of the many people who think Doors leader Jim Morrison’s 1971 demise was suspicious, you might be right. A story in the U.K.’s The Mail on Sunday suggests Morrison’s death may be reinvestigated.

According to his death certificate, Morrison, who was famously found dead in the bathtub of his Paris apartment at the age of 27, died from natural causes. But according to The End – Jim Morrison, a new book by Sam Bernett, a French-born former New York Times journalist, club manager and friend of Morrison, the rocker died of a massive heroin overdose in the bathroom of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Circus club in Paris’ Left Bank and was then moved to the tub as part of an astonishing cover-up meant to deflect blame from the posse of drug dealers Morrison patronized.

(Details on what Bernett says actually happened to Morrison, after the jump)

Bernett claims that in the early hours of July 3, 1971, Morrison showed up looking to buy heroin for his then-girlfriend Pamela Courson. After scoring and splitting for the bathroom, he failed to reappear. “About half an hour later, a cloakroom attendant came up to me and told me someone was locked in one of the cubicles and wasn’t coming out. I got a bouncer to smash the door down,” Bernett recalls. He says he found Morrison’s body slumped over the toilet. “We were certain he’d been snorting heroin because there was foam coming out of his lips as well as blood,” Bernett says. “He was scared of needles so never injected drugs.” Bernett brought in a customer who worked as a medic, who proclaimed Morrison dead.

At this point, Bernett says, Morrison’s dealers appeared, insisted the singer was still alive (though passed out) and carried the rocker out of the club, saying they would take care of him. Shortly thereafter, Bernett claims someone representing the club’s owner called, warning him not to tell anyone what happened.

Bernett says then-24-year-old singer/scenester Marianne Faithfull was also in the bar that night and was similarly sworn to secrecy. “Marianne never mentioned Jim again,” Bernett says. “She won’t talk about what happened in the club to this day.”

So why talk now? “I want to get rid of my heavy load,” Bernett says. “At least everything is now out there to be discussed. I’ve said what I have to say.” Will Bernett’s claims inspire French authorities to reopen the investigation? The twenty-year statute of limitations for criminal cases is up, but action could still be taken in civil court. A spokesman for France’s Police National told The Mail, “The new evidence will have to be considered.”

God is a god of forgiveness. Jim is home now in complete peace. All is forgiven and it’s no-ones fault.

He was like all of the children of the 60s sure, afraid, talented, and had no way to turn but to God . This he did not he went the other route and it cost him not fame nor fortune but life. The other side can be broken into through Jesus Christ , unless its the dark side you seek and thats what he did and its everyones fault.

Hello all you Morrison fans. I can remember riding in a pickup with my mother and hearing Light My Fire when it first came out I was about four years old at the time, I really dug Love Me Two Times also. It was when I was in the navy stationed on a destroyer when I got my first real exposure to his wonderfull rhetorical skills in song and speaking when I was turned on to a cassette tape of “Weird Scenes Inside The Gold Mine” and reading No One Here Gets Out Alive. His Death has always been a very painfull thing for me, I do so wish he could have lived on. His demise was a tragedy in it’s truest form. It is a shame that people go around making claims that he is alive to capitalize on him. I pray that Jim is in complete peace and with Pamela. God Bless Them Both!

I’m not sure what all that political and pollution chat is about either. lol -But yeah, if I lost a loved one, mysteriously…I would want to know what really happened! He died in a foreign country and I think we owe that to him. Jim’s spirit lives on, so he will still rest in peace if we open the grave. It is just a shell that will be examined. It’s a shame his own parents never took charge of this. Also, if you go to YouTube.com and search: Underwaterfall and Woman in the Widow, you can hear Jim’s beautiful, beautiful voice.
-Peace.

That website doesnt work for me “Antispamnow”. Have any other way to get to it or a different link? I copied and pasted it from here and tried to ad www in front of it, didnt work. I agree Derek, he was very influential and was always living from his heart. I also agree with you Jana, he did have many faces and most likely it was an overdose, but the way it is clouded and hidden, I dont believe it was self dosed.

JimFan-Cyndi | 7/26/2007, 11:04 pm EST

Hiya all. I’m a massive Morrison fan!! Not to sure what all he pollution and political chat is about, but why isn’t there any chat about this article concerning the reinvestigation of Jim’s death? Anyone have an opinion on that? Imagine that reopening. OMG! Lets hear some chat about that!!! What do you think? How do you feel about that? Fans only reply! I am a hard core Morrison fan. Have loved his music all my life. To be able to have the possibility to know what really happened will be life altering as music is my life. Peace to you all.

Judy | 7/25/2007, 10:54 pm EST

Trish,
Although I have known “of” Jim for years, just the past few months I have come to learn about him and I’ve been re-introduced to his music and poetry. I am SO drawn in…hook, line and sinker. I just love The Doors and Jim Morrison was amazing! I wish people took the time to understand him more. My question is… is there a website, or a good forum to discuss this wonderful man’s life with people who love him and his music? I’m just blown away and so on fire! It would be nice to have someone else to talk to about Jim.

Judy | 7/24/2007, 9:28 pm EST

Thank you Trish.
I would seriously like to see criminal charges pressed against this guy. It’s a cruel joke and extremely disrespectful.

Trish | 7/24/2007, 3:38 pm EST

Judy,
I’ve seen that website and those pictures too..as a hardcore Jim fan, I would LOVE to believe that its actually him, but my better judgement tells me otherwise. Its freaky how much they look alike, but I tell myself, would Jim actually be living his life that way in exile? and then let some random guy who claims to be his agent, make money off him? That would go against everything the Jim we know/love stood for, so as hard as it is not to believe, I really think its just another hoax :(

Judy | 7/22/2007, 10:39 am EST

One more thing-
There’s a guy out there claiming that Jim Morrison is still alive and that he’s his agent now. Supposedly Jim is in a movie and is known as An American Cowboy. I saw the pictures posted of “Jim”…it’s scary because the mouth shape is the same. Can anyone please let me know if this is for real? The guy claims to have contacted the FBI and it is suppose to be for real!!! THAT is why it may be a good idea to exhume his grave…if only to disprove some idiot’s lies. Can anyone please respond?

Tams | 7/22/2007, 8:22 am EST

Yeah- This would prove whether or not he’s really buried there.
They should do the same for Bruce Lee.

Judy | 7/22/2007, 8:18 am EST

Go ahead and exhume the body. Once and for all lets find out what really happened. We would then be the voice for Jim. Maybe he wants us to know the truth.
He was GREAT!

Linda | 7/21/2007, 9:27 pm EST

Message to Derek:

Are you the same Derek I met so long ago in January 2004 in CT? I’m just rereading several Doors books lately, decided to check out this website, and when I saw your name, I thought, can it be????

Sorry we lost touch. Hope you are doing well.

To Jana

i agree with everything you are saying.
but
think about what you first said
he had many faces
that is why people believe other things then it was an overdose
If any body would pull off some elaborate death hoxe or something crazy it was jim
im not saying that i believe that
chances are it was an overdose
but never rule out the impossible

Jana | 7/19/2007, 3:20 pm EST

in life Jim seemed to have many faces. why should his death not have just as many? i think it is halarious to believe he died of anything, but a drug overdose of some kind, be it alcohol or heroine or a combination of any other exesses that he indulged in. i think a part of him would like that we have flicked the spotlight back on him, and a part of him would think us lickspittal sheep following blindly along. express what is inside, and be vulgar about it if you want to, Jim certainly was. i think he was a wonderful poet, a hell of a singer, and a gatherer of people. he believed in a self-fulling destiny of tragedy that was going to lead him to an early end. but you think what you want to about his music and his life and his death. just so long as you think.

Jim is one of the most influential poets in the world. He led his own life and acted upon his own thoughts. Not like most of our society that just makes up words uses a godamn beat machine and slaps it all together. such as “This is why im hot” how deep those lyrics are. but the most disgusting thing about it is we the people…our society buys this crap. Jim at least didnt give two rats ass what anyone thought about him. He thought from his heart just as each and every one of us should.

How could anyone in their right mind complain about anyone receiving public assistance when this gang of fucking lying theives you’ve handed our country over to [Cheney and all his assosiates] are now employing over 150,000 PRIVATE contractors in Iraq. No, that’s not a misprint. CONTRACTORS, NOT TOTAL EMPLOYEES!! How much are ALL of us paying for THAT everyday, not just you Republicans [who still make excuses for these scum]. I’d be so embaressed to ever call myself a fucking Republican if I was you. No concept of morality or compassion or guilt, the whole lot of you.

sb1 | 7/16/2007, 5:52 pm EST

Jim was one of the best musicians alive and he’s still the best even in death. For some of you people who sit here and talk all that shit about him and saying he did everyone a favor by dying . . . that just goes to show how ignorant you are and how un educated you are about his music . . . THE DOORS music. He died 36 years ago . . . let him go and rest in peace . . . we will NEVER know what REALLY happened as NONE of US were there . . . only Pam and she’s gone. So let it go people . . .

RdWarrior | 7/16/2007, 2:41 pm EST

He died of natural causes ’cause it was natural for him to take overdoses. The Doors were one of my favorite bands in the 60s but Jim wasted his life and talent just like Janis & Jimi & Brian. The spirit of the 60s ended abruptly with those deaths and the End of the Beatles because our generation traded the drugs that opened the Doors of perception for the ones that closed us off from each other.

karmichmon | 7/16/2007, 1:16 pm EST

If Jim Morrison were alive right now and was reading this article he would be disgusted that people are taking something as simple as death and turning into this huge new report. Give him a break. Morrison you are truly an amazing, intelligent person. This article is against everything he ever believe in. leave it alone and just respect him. His music will live forever even if he didn’t. Some people are meant to die early rather than get old and pathetic. I say that Jim Morrison, his music, his poetry, and he philosophy represents a way to live your life. so go ahead and live it.

ocraMeDsrm | 7/16/2007, 1:00 pm EST

this is off-topic of the article. but this is on-topic of the stupid political comments

“Instead of doing nothing but criticizing, complaining and making excused (like every Republican in the USA)”-Paul.

You are truly a ignorant person. I’m going to state it right now: I’m a republican. I can’t stand when people make joint observations like that. I could say for example “every democrat finds it easier to rely on the government than get a job and earn their own money” or that “No democrat or liberal is able to help themselves in anyway” which is true for some democrats, but not for all. Paul would you like it if i said that you are person that is so cowardly that you cant help yourself in anyway (like all other democrats in the USA).? no because I don’t know you, I don’t know if you can help yourself, if you could work 2 jobs like me so that you don’t have to rely on the government for help like a 3 year old relies on its mother to feed them.

Maybe you should think about what comes out of your head before you go ahead and say it. you are a selfish person, along with the other people that have the same ideas about political parties. I personally don’t trust the government, I don’t believe in giving away money to people that can easily get a job and buy their own food than claiming that they can’t do anything. I don’t believe in taking money from people that have earned it all their lives to give away to people that don’t feel like getting out of bed in the morning to go to their job, wether they hate it or not. I don’t believe that one person can tell another person to do with their money. I don’t like my jobs, but that doesn’t stop me from going to them, I may not like it but i like that i can pay my bills and give my kids $1.50 for school lunches everyday. If theirs anhything i learned from my father is that you control every situation. if your arm is hurt and you can’t work, fine. but after a year and your arm still “hurts”.. that’s no longer an excuse. Do something, get a job being a tele-marketer for gods-sake, you don’t even have to get our of your bed.

It takes a sad pathetic person to take Jim Morrison’s death and turn it into a political contest of who’s beliefs are true and who’s are not. I can tell you right now that everyone is a little closed minded. Maybe you should be like Morrison and be open minded to other peoples ideas. Instead of saying “NO” say “Yes, I see your point but..”. I try to do that but i wont try when i see arrogant comments like “Instead of doing nothing but criticizing, complaining and making excused (like every Republican in the USA)”.

It’s people like “Paul” that claim that republicans are close minded and make excuses, but let me ask you this Paul: would you be open minded to my post? are you going to criticize my post? are you going to agree or disagree and why? and most important; What is YOUR excuse, why do you believe in your beliefs?

News flash: There’s no such thing as “RIGHT” and “WRONG” but there is such a thing as “ARROGANT” and “CONSIDERATE”

-Mrs.

misskmm | 7/16/2007, 12:23 pm EST

thats stupid. Jim morrison died in paris in 1971 after a herion overdose. this Bernett guy does know anything, was he there? no. Pamela was there this is what she says and what i believe;; he was coughing up blood, they didnt think anything of it because he had done that before, he went to go take a bath, she fell asleep, woke up and found him dead because of a heart failure as a result of the massive amount of herion in his system. its not that hard really, and why is some guy writing about it, writing something completely different from every book and every interview with Pamela Courson, that ive ever read. “ummmm……paul” has got it right when he says “I also don’t believe this guy…waiting all this time to write a book and make some money looks WAY to fishy to be taken seriously.” why doesnt everyone just leave it alone? its not that big of a mystery or controversy. this new “book” sounds like a version of the millions of book with all different theroys about how Cobain died, thats more of a mystery. go investigate that.

To Bonogamy

RS has always had the guts to report failures whether presidents, posers or pop stars. The only failing is your own to read between the lines where it states the very obvious. Try telling those that you seem to be trying to impress with your negative slant that the likes of Thomson,Marcus,White or Steadman have failed and they will more than likely tell you that it is indeed you that has missed the point. I have found from the very early history of its head
strong broadsheet days that RS and RS on its Jim lonesome among all of its contemporaries and unalike those contemporaries has always, always published ‘ all the news that fits ‘. Suggest that maybe you find yourself an interpreter so as that you can put into context that which you seem to be having so much trouble understanding. The next time you go to assasinate the messenger save your bullets for the real enemy as in the fat cat producers, promotors and parasitic beaurocratic middle men
whom the whole entertainment industry was fashioned by and for.
The Stars of the show are a bunch of hopelessly unemployed potential junkies looking for a franchise to flog. Their talent is their calling card and you,my friend, belong to the potential blood pool that their connecting capitalist fucks leech off with their plastic enticements and red hot deals.

I personally think that Jim’s whole life and death needs to be looked at little more closely just to give the American public peace of mind. I find in reading his peotry and listening to his music that he knew he would die tragically and live that way too.

DIESEL | 7/11/2007, 10:20 am EST

Actually, most concerts are heavy polluters and energy wasters. Powering up tons of amps for guitars uses lots of electric power, trucking equipment to locations causes a lot of pollution, as does flying these artists all over, driving them to performance areas, etc. So, realistically, what does a concert do in terms of promoting “going green”? If I’m wrong, please feel free to correct me, but I can’t imagine that holding a concert will draw attention to environmental concerns.

Ray | 7/11/2007, 10:19 am EST

Jim Morrison was strangled by Bea Arthur. That much is clear from the historical record.

thinkaboutit | 7/11/2007, 9:22 am EST

In relation to Morrison I loved him growing up but read the book “No One Here Gets Out Alive”, & according to his legal ex-wife she got rid of a baby in the 5th month at his request. So it really doesn’t matter to me how he died, if she told the truth, I’m glad he’s gone.Live Earth? Puhlease! Larger “carbon footprint” than some countries create in a year (!) in one day. Cheesecrop | 7/11/2007, 7:03 am EST

Interesting take w/ Morrison.

As for off comment posts, my birthday just past, but no one recognized it. To remedy this situation I plan on holding concerts around the world to promote it. All acts will be required to cover Doors songs, and sign a cleanliness waiver.

Morrison is dead but his music is timeless

to the off topic bs, the US is a big polluter and by far the largest in the industrialized world, to blame china is to ignore our own fault in the matter and for criticisim of the artists, most acknowledged their role as polluters on the show and pledged to offset their emissions, as should you

Anonymous | 7/10/2007, 9:45 pm EST

It doesnt matter how Morrison died, But make no mistake he had talent, and without him we wouldnt have many important groups/singers.

Jake Burns | 7/10/2007, 9:28 pm EST

Who in the hell cares?

zentropa | 7/10/2007, 8:52 pm EST

To ummmm and Paul. How are you guys using the Keypads with those SraightJackets on?

zentropa | 7/10/2007, 8:45 pm EST

Paris-Bathtub-club toilet?????????Either way,he died in the Shithouse.Nothing as bad as a Talented Junkie.

JC | 7/10/2007, 8:42 pm EST

That awful organ music still haunts my dreams. Everyone was done a great favor that night when he choked on Sam Bennet’s dick at the club.

some of u ppl are fucking stupid ,no one should EVER question jim morrisons talent that is rock n roll blasphemy!!!!!

bp | 7/10/2007, 7:57 pm EST

Ummmmm is right. Paul, you’re a douche.

bitches brew | 7/10/2007, 7:50 pm EST

investigate what? if thats what happened, then there’s no investigation, and it changes NOTHING. the guy wrote shitty poetry and pulled his dick out a few times.

“light my fire” is just some clown blowing smoke up our ass.

Im with Bonogomy. Live Earth accomplished nothing and was utterly pointless with the exception of the self-gratification of the performers…it was a sorority philanthropy on a global scale…accomplished nothing, sold a lot of t-shirts.

Nicky Dover | 7/10/2007, 7:49 pm EST

ummmmm…. Paul. You are fucking retarded. Paul is correct in saying that republicans are dipshits. Go screw urself.

Paul | 7/10/2007, 7:38 pm EST

ummmmmmm……

Your ignorance is overwhelming. Please keep your pathetic existence to yourself and spare the rest of us your stupid ramblings. Bye!

Faldo | 7/10/2007, 7:36 pm EST

Live Earth: No one cares that a bunch of millionaire singers think we should use less toilet paper.

Whoever wrote that, good job. One of the funniest quips I’ve read on RS in a long time.

By the way everyone knows Morrison was killed by the Nixon administration, right?

killingfloor | 7/10/2007, 7:29 pm EST

Kill your idols.

ummmm......paul | 7/10/2007, 6:11 pm EST

“I should have reserved that solely for solely you. Moron.”

Nice sentence, and you’re calling ME a 5th grader.

You give me a hard time for not using my name? Is Paul your name? Like Madonna or Prince?

Paul | 7/10/2007, 6:02 pm EST

ummmmm…………

You can’t even use your name on your post and you want to “break my nose”. Did your 5th grade buddy tell you to write that?

I do agree with you on one thing, I was wrong for making blanket statements of republican idiocy. I should have reserved that solely for solely you. Moron.

HarryOatmeal | 7/10/2007, 5:52 pm EST

Uh, didn’t Rolling Stone already have an article stating much the same a couple years back?

ummmm......paul | 7/10/2007, 5:36 pm EST

You are a moron. Nowhere in Bonogamy’s post did he ever get political. In fact, if you read your post, YOU sir are the one getting political.

Your blanket statements about Republicans are not only unfair, but hugely idiotic. Statements like that are the cause for most of our problems in this country. (Of course Republicans do the same thing, that’s the problem with our gov’t and why we can’t accomplish anything, both sides think the other is wrong on every issue).

Every Republican does that? Come on. You probably also think every Republican is against environmental causes, which is most certainly untrue.

These blanket statements our country makes further divide us on issues, and quite frankly, if I knew who you were, I’d break your nose.

That being said, of course Jim Morrison didn’t die of natural causes. I also don’t believe this guy…waiting all this time to write a book and make some money looks WAY to fishy to be taken seriously. I don’t think we will ever know the truth.

Rusty | 7/10/2007, 5:33 pm EST

Who cares?

HH | 7/10/2007, 5:27 pm EST

his talent should also be reinvestigated. most overrated ‘musician’ ever

Paul | 7/10/2007, 4:53 pm EST

Bongogamy:
Your name might as well be Glenn Beck. Why does every issue have to be political. Was this event 100% successful? No. Nothing is. Was it a step in the right direction to educate the public about the environmental issues facing our world? Undoubtedly so. Instead of doing nothing but criticizing, complaining and making excused (like every Republican in the USA) Look at the event for what it was: A step in the right direction to raise awareness. What have you done lately?

Stuporfly | 7/10/2007, 4:49 pm EST

I thought maybe he was buried under an avalanche of the fucking awful poetry he wrote.

Bonogamy | 7/10/2007, 4:35 pm EST

This comment is off-topic and will be deleted, but I’m going to give it a go anyway, since RS’ editors don’t want to report it. From BBC News:

“A three-hour NBC programme marking the global day of Live Earth concerts was the least-watched show on mainstream US television on Saturday night.

It attracted an average audience of 2.7 million viewers and was beaten by a re-run of animated film Monsters Inc.”

RS’s pimping of Live Earth ignored the most basic criticisms of the event, which plainly said that there were no accomplishments to announce, no goals in mind except the usual blah-blah about carbon emissions, and the hypocrisy of the private jets and VIP treatment of the performers.

Live Earth was not be a success. The world’s biggest polluter (it’s China now, get some education) is not going to be persuaded by a Madonna concert to lower it’s carbon emissions. The world’s second biggest polluter even less so by the big-oil sympathies of the Bush administration. Madonna lives in a fantasy world bubble where she thinks the world cares what a millionaire diva thinks about what we should do with our household waste.

RS really has it’s head in the sand about Live Earth unless the editors have the journalistic guts to report it’s failure. No one cares that a bunch of millionaire singers think we should use less toilet paper.

Hasselhoff | 7/10/2007, 4:18 pm EST

Well, I have to come clean. I have fashioned my singing style after Jim Morrison’s. It took me right to the top of the charts and now I can be seen weekly on “America’s Got Talent”. I just needed to get that load off my chest. Thank you Jesus - and Jim!

Charlie Brown | 7/10/2007, 4:10 pm EST

I guess if you are gonna lift a heavy burden off your chest you might as well make some $$$ while doing it…can’t just give the story to the news, no that would be too easy gotta write a book about one night…makes sense

jungleland | 7/10/2007, 4:01 pm EST

It’s a good story…sells newspapers (and web-zines)

Deez Nuttzz | 7/10/2007, 4:00 pm EST

Interesting theory and article. But it should be noted, dear RS writer, that after the jump I’m going to explain to you how much you suck for continuing to denigrate and infantilize your reporting style by using the oh-so-cutesy term “after the jump”:

abandonedstation | 7/10/2007, 3:54 pm EST

this is silly, he just died of excess of everything (mainly whisky).

marnr67 | 7/10/2007, 3:53 pm EST

that is about morrison faking his own death.

marnr67 | 7/10/2007, 3:52 pm EST

idk i believe it. I’ve met with a friend of Morrison’s, and former editor of the Los Angeles Press who told me once he’s seen enough evidence to believe anything.
