Homestake Mine Proposed for a Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has chosen the former Homestake gold mine in Lead, SD, as the site for a multipurpose deep underground science and engineering laboratory. The proposal, chosen from a field of four finalists, was prepared by a collaboration of researchers and submitted to an NSF site selection panel through the University of California at Berkeley. The Homestake team could receive up to $5 million a year for the next three years to develop a more specific technical design for the laboratory.
In recognition South Dakota resident T. Denny Sanfords $70 million gift, the new deep underground research facility will be named the Sanford Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory at Homestake.
The underground laboratory and proposed Sanford Science Education Center will provide education and outreach opportunities. Please see the following video clip.

State Launches New Service-Oriented Website: SD Connect
South Dakota recently launched a new website called: South Dakota Connect; which connects all citizens, state employees and others alike to the most frequently requested services and programs available through the Departments of Social Services, Human Services and Health. South Dakota Connect is an information gateway for individuals to quickly find services and resources, without knowing the name of a certain program or which Department the program belongs to. There are multiple ways to complete searches within the site and it also includes contact information for each of the three agencies in all areas throughout the state where offices are located.
Visit SD Connect today, sdconnect.sd.gov, and learn more about the programs and services the Departments of Social Services, Human Services and Health have to offer!
