About World Environment Day 2007
World Environment Day, commemorated each year on 5 June, is one of
the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of
the environment and enhances political attention and action.
The World Environment Day slogan selected for 2007 is Melting Ice - a Hot
Topic? In support of International Polar Year, the WED theme selected for 2007 focuses on
the effects that climate change is having on polar ecosystems and communities, and the
ensuing consequences around the world.
The main international celebrations of the World Environment Day 2007 will
be held in Norway. UNEP is honoured that the City of Tromsų will be hosting this United
Nations day. Please visit the Norwegian Polar Institute WED website for more information
on the celebrations in Norway.
The day's agenda is to give a human face to environmental issues; empower
people to become active agents of sustainable and equitable development; promote an
understanding that communities are pivotal to changing attitudes towards environmental
issues; and advocate partnership, which will ensure all nations and peoples enjoy a safer
and more prosperous future.
World Environment Day is a people's event with colourful activities such
as street rallies, bicycle parades, green concerts, essays and poster competitions in
schools, tree planting, as well as recycling and clean-up campaigns.
About G-Film
G-Film is the new and official title of the Australian World Environmental
Day Short Film Festival, an initiative supported by the United Nations Environment
Programme ( http://www.unep.org ). G-Film finalists and
awards will be showcased at GREX 07 (Australian International Green Build & Renewable
Energy Expo, 1-3 June 2007, Sydney). http://www.grex.com.au
G-Film follows on from the success of last years Eco Short Film Festival, an event that
celebrated both World Environment and World Ocean Day.
G-Film aims to:
celebrate World Environment Day
increase public awareness on specific environmental issues
provide a venue and forum where amateur and professional film and
documentary makers can gain media exposure
encourage the expression of specific groups (scientific, community
environmental, schools, NGO's and film students) through their participation in the Film
Festival; and
entertain our visitors at GREX
"A revolution in environmental consciousness swept the planet in the
early 1980s. Film was one of the central tools in this revolution. Early campaigners made
films and lugged projectors around community halls to get the word out. In this way, wild
and remote places were seen and understood by a generation of urban dwellers, inspiring
community outrage and building campaigns that rocked the political establishment. Film has
informed, inspired and illuminated the plight of our precious planet."
Felicity Wade, NSW Campaign Manager, The Wilderness Society
