ABC Kids Channel

The Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts today welcomed the launch by the ABC of Australia's first digital multichannel.

This represents not only a great step forward in the development of digital television in Australia but great news to the many young fans of programs like Play School and The Magic School Bus.

The Federal Government and the ABC clearly recognise the opportunities made possible by digital television. This is evidenced by the Government's commitment to fully fund the ABC's digital transmission and distribution costs and to provide substantial funding for the ABC's digital capital costs.

The ABC is to be congratulated for its commitment through ABC Kids to the further development of Australian content.

Australia has a long and proud history of producing great children's television. Hopefully this new channel will launch the careers of the next Bananas In Pyjamas and provide new opportunities for those involved in the development of children's television.
