Walla Walla
Our region's rich German rural heritage is a feature of Walla Walla and remains strong today with the Zion Lutheran Church, being the largest Lutheran Church in NSW. Standing close by is a faithfully restored replica of one of the German Wagons, that made the six week, six hundred mile journey from the Barossa Vallley in 1869, bringing 56 German farmers who settled throughout the area. A full history of the journey and those involved is included in the display. Many sounds from the past can be heard in the living classroom at the Walla Walla Heritage Festival. This is a day when the small but vibrant community of Walla Walla brings history to life on the oval, with the shearing of sheelp, loading of wool and ploughing of fields using work horses. Spinning demonstrations, fashion parades and vintage cars and machinery displays are popular as is the Australian Bush Poetry Competition. The flavours of German food and good Aussie damper can be tasted. The Walla Walla Heritage Festival is held on the second Sunday of November. This German heritage remains today. The Zion Lutheran Church was built in 1874 and is the largest in NSW. The community has a lovely village feel to it, evidence of its slow evolution over the past 140 years as a service centre for the surrounding farming district. Near to the town is the Walla Walla Gum Swamp, a bushland regeneration project. Community Development CommitteeThe Community of Walla Walla is going through a period of considerable community activity. This is due in considerable part to a strategic planning process resulting in the formation of the Walla Walla Community Development Committee. This committee has representatives from a number of demographic sectors in the community including business, rural, families, young children, township, service clubs and seniors. Walla Walla has a community developed strategic plan that describes a number of key result areas, objectives and strategies. A number of the objectives are concerned with improving the physical design and image and the infrastructure of the town geared toward making Walla a better place to live and work are being achieved. Major objectives include streetscaping and the establishment of a Regional Transaction Centre. In partnership with the previous Culcairn Shire Council (now forming part of Greater Hume Shire Council), the RTC is operational and the streetscaping soon underway. With these objectives achieved the Walla Walla Community Development Committee is ready to start working toward some of the other Key Result Areas identified in the Strategic Plan and take advantage of the momentum and build on energy and interest already generated in the community.
