How many remain…?

The oldest surviving Éolienne, said to date from 1871–2, stands in the Bollée bell-foundry in St-Jean-de-Braye (Orléans). However, its claim may be undermined by the list of clients published by Auguste Bollée fils in August 1888, which says simply ‘Bollée, Amédée, propriétaire à Orléans, 1874, [no.] 2’. There seems no good reason for the manufacturer to misrepresent the date that a machine had been supplied to his uncle — though the machine erected in St-Jean-de-Braye may have been the Le Mans prototype, sent to Amédée Bollée only after it had outlived its usefulness on Ernest-Sylvain's factory or estate.

The St-Jean-de-Braye machine undoubtedly does have features that differ from the Éoliennes Bollée surviving in France. A detailed examination of the wind-turbine erected in the Château du Hutreau in Saint-Gemmes-sur-Loire in 1874 (which has diagonal Papillon drive and rod-type staircase treads) will probably confirm that the several machines were made before the pattern changed. Unfortunately, this particular machine has been dismantled, even though the pump house survives in what has become a public park. It is believed that the dismantled Éolienne is being kept in the parks-and-gardens departmental depot in Angers and will eventually go to the Musée de l’Eau or ‘Museum of Water’ being created in Le Mans.

None of the subsequent alterations seem to be anything other than the result of experience and, perhaps, complaints voiced by purchasers. If the date of the St-Jean-de-Braye Éolienne Bollée is accepted as 1874, the 1888 list indicates that there were at least three earlier installations: one in 1872 and two in 1873. Before the identification of ‘prototype features’ can be justified for St-Jean-de-Braye, therefore, it is vital to trace details of the 1872–3 machines.

We have now prepared a list of more than three hundred Éolienne Bollée sites, but many of those installed in 1900–31 may still be missing. One of the reasons for providing this website is to inspire research into these sites and provide a central repository of information. Preliminary work suggests that at least sixty wind-turbines still stand, including examples in Bassens (restored in 1997) and Dolus-le-Sec. The latter was officially opened on 26th May 2002 after extensive restoration work. The No. 3 originally installed to supply the Château de la Vilaine in Esvres-sur-Indre was recommissioned on 2nd July 2005.

The material that follows lists all the Éolienne Bollée sites that had been identified by 22nd October 2006, totalling 312 (including one that stood on two different sites and is entered twice). Machines that are highlighted are known to be standing (or, at least, some parts of the site remain visible or parts are preserved in storage); those marked were reportedly standing during compilation of the directory that accompanied The Éolienne Bollée, by J. Kenneth Major and André Gaucheron (1995), but are currently of unknown status; and those that are marked X — sometimes with the date — are known to have been dismantled. Details of machines that have been dismantled, and new locations that may be found, will be welcomed. A complete index to sites can also be obtained: see ‘Contact details’.

No. 1 Éoliennes Bollée had a rotor diameter of 2.5m (8.2ft).
No. 2 rotors measured 3.5m (11.5ft).
No. 3 rotors were 5m (16.4ft) in diameter.
No. 4 had a 7m (23ft) rotor.

The dimensions of the Nos 1, 2 and 3 were deliberately chosen to give a surface area — and thus power — in the ratio 1:2:4.

Site lists

The details have been compiled from Bollée's client lists, dating from 1888–94, and from observation. It is believed that the summary of Éoliennes made by Ernest-Sylvain and Auguste Bollée prior to the issue of the February 1894 catalogue is sufficiently accurate to allow the sites to be numbered sequentially. However, in the absence of order books, it is impossible to judge priority within each order-year, and individual locations have been listed alphabetically.

Potential sites

Most of these are listed in the inventories of the Ministère de la Culture et Communication. However, it is often difficult to distinguish Bollée-type turbines — as so many surviving machines are listed simply as ‘Éoliennes’. It is much more likely that sites in Départements such as Indre-et-Loire, Sarthe or Yonne will prove to be Bollée-type than those in other less well-documented districts. The site discovered in Rostrenen, 22 Côtes-du-Nord (Bretagne), has been transferred to the main list; another potential location, Filature de soie ‘Maison Rouge’, Saint-Jean-de-Gard, 30 (Languedoc-Roussillon), is now known to have contained a locally-made wind-engine.

La Sauvetat, 32 Gers (Midi-Pyrénées)
Château de Creuse, 80 Somme (Picardie)
Fonderie de Farincourt, 52 Haute-Marne (Champagne). No trace of this installation remains, if indeed an Éolienne Bollée ever stood on the site. However, foundries needed water, and a large lake survives to the north of the site.
Château de la Ferrière, Vaux-sur-Aure, 14 Calvados (Basse-Normandie)
Les Giraults, Montbouy, 45 Loiret (Centre). Only a cylindrical masonry tower-base survives on this site. It has been linked with Lebert-type Éoliennes Bollée, but evidence is lacking; tower/tank/pylon
combinations were made by other constructors..
Maison le Haura, Illats, 33 Gironde (Aquitaine)
Ferme Haut-Roussillac, Visan, 84 Vaucluse (Provence-Côte-d’Azur)
Maison la Madeleine, Fréjus, 83 Var (Provence-Côte-d’Azur)
Domaine de Tournelay, Nueil-sur-Argent, 79 Deux-Sèvres (Poitou-Charente)
