- Corrections
to my Lewis and Clark Lexicon of Discovery (2004, Washington
State University Press).
- The Michael of
Rhodes project is a collaborative effort, sponsored by the Dibner
Institute for the History of Science and Technology at MIT, to analyse,
translate and publish Michael's commonplace book, which contains, among
many other things, one of the oldest known treatises on shipbuilding.
Michael was an immigrant to Venice who rose from the position of galley
oarsman to galley commander and made many voyages to places as distant
as London and the Black Sea in the period from 1401 to 1443. A
marvelous conference of similarly international
scope reintroducing Michael's manuscript to the world
was hosted by the Dibner Institute in December 2005.
- Photos of sailing
vessels in the frescos of the Gallery of Maps in the
Vatican, designed by Ignazio Danti, 1580.
- Material on my proposed Historical
Dictionary of Mediterranean Nautical Terms.
- Astronomical
terms (stars,
constellations, the moon) in the northwestern Mediterranean c1300.
- Loan-words
(mostly
Italian and English) in modern nautical Greek.
- A sample of maritime-history
reading slips I've submitted to the Oxford
English Dictionary.
- Articles I've written for the OED News:
- on my historical reading work for the OED (June 2005).
- on the names of North American peoples and their languages (January 1999).
- on English nautical vocabulary (July 1998)
- An article
on nautical terms in
everyday English written to accompany an interview in the Wordmaster feature
of Voice of America News, 8 August 2002.
- From
reading-slips to dictionary
entry: early examples from my OED work on ethnonyms.
