Green Edition

Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome to The Gazette's Green Edition. You can now choose how you want your paper delivered -- to your doorstep or to your desktop. If you don't find answers to your questions here, you may email us at online@gazette.com, or call (719) 476-1634.

Q: What's the difference between the Green Edition and gazette.com?
A: The Green Edition contains all the news, photos, ads, box scores, and special sections in the printed Gazette. It's a clickable replica of our newspaper. It is a subscriber-based service.

Gazette.com contains the day's top stories, breaking news updated throughout the day, Web exclusives, plus year-round online features such as Best of the Springs, real-time weather and forecasts, discussion boards, the cinema guide, the daily death notices and much more. There is no fee.

Q: What is the cost of the Green Edition subscription?
A: The current price is $6.44 for four weeks. This is about half the cost of the full print subscription rate. The charges are an automatic recurring bill to your credit card every four weeks unless you call us to cancel: (719) 476-1634. You also may send written notice to: Lauri Joy, Circulation Dept., The Gazette, 30 S. Prospect St., Colorado Springs, CO 80903, or you may email customercare@gazette.com.

Q: When I log in to the Green Edition, I get a screen that is asking whether I have a dialup connection or broadband connection. What is this?
A: Dialup connection through a modem is a much slower connection speed and is not optimal for viewing the Green Edition. This screen tells us that you need a version optimized for that slower connection.

Q: When I try to log in, I am simply returned to the login page with no error message. Why is this happening?
A: The most likely explanation is that you're running a personal firewall such as Zone Alarm Pro or McAfee. If that is the case, you'll need to add our IPs to your "Trusted Zones" area. Please call (719) 476-1634 for instructions, or email online@gazette.com.

Q: When I call up a story in the clickable paper, what are my viewing options?
A: Click on View in the story window. "Newspaper View" displays the story just as it appears in the newspaper, with columns and photos in place. "Quick View" is a text view of the story and photos. You can email or print the story in either mode. Just use the icons at the top of the story for print or email.

Q: The text is too small to read. How can I enlarge it?
A: You can expand the type size in Quick View if you are having trouble reading the story. There is a range of sizes for your viewing needs. You can enlarge the page itself by clicking on the icons in the upper right, but stories are meant to be clicked on.

Q: When I've clicked on a story, how can I make the story window larger?
A: Just drag the triangle in the bottom righthand corner of the story window. You control how much larger to make the window.

Q: Are the Sunday advertising inserts available online?
A: Yes, most of the ads are available in the electronic delivery. Just follow the links on the side navigation at left. Links to the inserts stay up all week. At this time we do not have online rights to the Sunday comics. Most of our Sunday comics collection is available at our affiliate site, MSNBC.com. The Sunday TV magazine is not included in the Green Edition, but you may use our customizable TV listings link in the left navigation.

Q: What is "My Collection"?
A: My Collection, an icon in the story window, allows you to save the story to a clipboard for later reading. The story will stay in your Collection until you remove it. You may want to clip event schedules, advertisements, coupons, or other newspaper items to use later. Please note: My Collection uses cookies, which do not travel from computer to computer. Further, if you clear your cookies, you will lose your collected stories.

Q: Where are the obituaries?
A: You will always find obituaries and death notices in the Metro section. To find them quickly, go to Features and click Search. Type in Deaths, and you will get links to the obituaries and death notices.

Q: Where are back issues?
A: You can get to back issues two ways. Mouse over the date at the top of the daily edition for the most recent two weeks. To go back farther, go to Features, then select Go to Archives. This section contains whole editions back to Jan. 1, 2004 and text of articles back to April 1988. Use of archives is free with your subscription.

Q: What about articles older than April 1988?
A: You must call the Penrose Public Library at (719) 531-6333.

Q: What if I am only interested in articles about, say, the Air Force Academy?
A: The clickable edition makes it easier than ever to find specific coverage. Just click on Features, use Search, and type in keywords such as Air or Air Force or Academy, and links to any coverage will appear -- no matter what section they are in. You can search just that day or the entire past week.

Q: Sometimes features such as the Crossword, Jumble, Comics or Television Tonight listings appear as text. How can I view these correctly?
A: Just open the item and click on View, then select Newspaper View.

Q: Can I print out articles, photos, and features such as crosswords and comics?
A: Yes. Simply click on the element you want to print, and click the icon of the printer in the top toolbar.

Q: Can I email the crossword or comics to another user?
A: Yes you can. Just click on the feature you want and select the email icon.

Q: I prefer following text links to stories, rather than paging through an entire section or edition. How can I do that?
A: The Table of Contents, or TOC, is located in the top blue toolbar. This tool provides headlines and summaries of key elements on the pages. Just click on the headline to go to the story. The TOC is a fast way to breeze through the clickable edition, closely resembling text links on a website.

Q: I'm on AOL. Why am I having difficulties viewing the Green Edition?
A: Due to a browser limitation, AOL users must initialize the browser window first before starting to navigate the clickable edition. To initialize the browser window, simply resize the browser window once. NOTE: Some versions of the AOL browser will not display the Green Edition. If you are able to log in but pages won't load, please try this corrective action: Dial in to the Internet as usual using your AOL connection. Then close the AOL browser and open your default Internet Explorer browser (or Netscape, if you prefer it). Go to The Gazette Online login page and sign in as usual. The pages should load correctly.

Q: You are collecting personal information when I sign up. Is this being offered to any third parties?
A: No. This information is for internal use only. Those who sign up will receive emails from The Gazette on occasion, but your personal data is not being sold or otherwise shared with outside parties.

Q: Can I download the entire paper as a PDF?
A: PDF, or high-resolution image, is primarily for users who want to download the entire paper for offline viewing later. Most users would find a high-resolution view to be too taxing on your computer for regular use. The news pages and individual articles and ads are already optimized for Web viewing. But if you want to download a PDF of the paper, you will need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader on your computer. To download Acrobat Reader, Click Here.

Q: Does the download take a long time?
A: On broadband connection, the download for an entire edition typically takes about 10 minutes. On a dialup connection it could be as long as 45 minutes.

Q: I can't see the whole page on my screen. What do I do?
A: If you cannot view the entire width of the page, find a scroll bar along the bottom edge of your Web page. You can scroll right or left to view more of the page. You also will be navigate up and down using the scroll bar on the right edge.

Q: Is there a way to get simple news alerts from The Gazette, so I can log in when I see a story of interest?
A: Yes. We send a news summary on weekdays, Monday through Friday. You can sign up at no charge at http://news.gazette.com. All we need is your name and email address.
