Shell Stitch Doily

It is nice and easy; great for beginners and looks pretty, too.

This doily utilizes stitches that are easy to learn or you may have already learned them and need something to make with stitches that you are comfortable with. This doily measures 9½ inches across.

You will need one ball of J & P Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen or other #10 crochet cotton, and a #6 steel crochet hook

Instructions:

Starting at center ch 10, join with a sl st to form ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, 18 sc in ring, join with sl st to first sc.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in joining, (ch 5, sk 2 sc, sc in next sc) 5 times, ch 2, dc in first sc to form last lp (6 lps).

Rnd 3: In lp just formed make (sc, ch 5, sc), * ch 5, in next lp make (sc, ch 5 and sc), repeat from * around, ending with ch 2, dc in first sc (12 lps).

Rnd 4: Sc in lp just formed, * ch 5, sc in next lp, repeat from * around, ending as before.

Rnd 5: In lp just formed make (sc, ch 5 sc), * ch 5, sc in next lp, ch 5, in next lp make (sc, ch 5 and sc), repeat from * around, ending as before (18 lps).

Rnd 6: Repeat Rnd 4.

Rnd 7: Sc in lp, * 5 dc in next sc, (shell made), sc in next lp, ch 5, sc in next lp. Repeat from * around, ending as before.

Rnd 8: Sc in lp, make a shell in next sc, sc in center dc of next shell, shell in next sc, sc in next lp, repeat from * around, join last shell to first sc.

Rnd 9: Sl st to center dc of next shell, sc in same place, * shell in next sc, sc in center dc of next shell, ch 5, sc in next sc, ch 5, sc in center dc of next shell, repeat form * around, ending with ch 2, dc in first sc.

Rnd 10: Sc in lp, * ch 5, s c in center dc of next shell, (ch 5, in next lp make sc, ch 5, sc) twice, repeat from * around, ending with sc in same lp as first sc was made, ch 2, dc in first sc (45 lps)

Rnd 11, 12 and 13: Repeat Rnd 4.

Rnd 14: Sc in lp, * shell in next sc, sc in next lp, (ch 5, sc in next lp) 4 times, repeat from * around, ending as before (9 shells on rnd).

Rnd 15: Sc in lp, * shell in next sc, sc in next shell, shell in next sc, sc in next lp, (ch 5, sc in next lp) 3 times, repeat from * around, ending as before.

Rnd 16: Sc in lp, *( shell in next sc, sc in next shell) twice, shell in next sc, sc in next lp, (ch 5, sc in next lp) twice, repeat from * around, ending as before.

Rnd 17: Sc in lp, *(shell in next sc, sc in next shell) 3 times, shell in next sc, sc in next lp, ch 5, s c in next lp, repeat form * around, ending as before.

Rnd 18: Sc in lp, *(shell in next sc, sc in next shell) 4 times, shell in next sc, sc in next lp, repeat from * around, join to first sc, turn.

Now work in rows to form point.

Row 1: Sl st to center of first shell, sc in same place, (shell in next sc, sc in next shell) 4 times, turn.

Rows 2. 3. 4: Work as for first row having one less shell on each row. Fasten off at end of row 4.

With wrong side of doily facing you, join thread to center of next free shell on last complete rnd and complete point to correspond. Continue in this way until all points have been completed.

Sc closely around, making 3 sc in each center dc at top of point. Fasten off.
