This photo of Pres. James K. Polk (second from the right seated) was the first-ever photo taken of an American president and his cabinet members.  The site of his family home, President James K. Polk State Historic Site in Pineville, is open to visitors year around.

The late Dr. Charlotte Hawkins Brown, seen in the print dress in this photo taken at Palmer Memorial Institute at Sedalia in the 1950s.  Charlotte Hawkins Brown Museum is currently celebrating this historic figure's induction into the N.C. Association of Educators hall of fame.

Operating hours at N.C. State Historic Sites vary so please check the individual sites' web pages for their regularly updated opening and closing hours and call or email in advance if interested in visiting on state holidays.

 “History Happens Here” is a yearlong celebration to tell North Carolina’s stories of struggle and freedom, memorable characters and colorful daily life.
The N.C. Department of Cultural Resources is now offering free “podcasts,”, which are downloadable audio files containing news and information about North Carolina’s performing arts, literature and history.
