What is +1 Access Service?
The +1 Access service is developed to provide Iridium post paid subscribers with a U.S.-based +1 phone number in addition to their existing 8816 phone number. As the 8816 country code can be difficult to dial in certain parts of the world and can generate high call charges for the calling party, the +1 Access enables simpler and less expensive calling of Iridium subscribers. The +1 Access can be added to any Iridium post paid account.

The +1 Access service is similar in concept to two-stage but doesn't require any user intervention. Each +1 number is directly mapped in the switch to an accompanying 8816 number. When a call is received via +1, the system identifies the correct MSISDN and routes the call to the Iridium user. The process is seamless, but there will be a slight delay prior to call connection - as is currently experienced with twostage.

Iridium subscribers will gain from the added convenience of having a U.S. phone number linked to their Iridium phone. Subscribers can manage their call costs and caller access by choosing to distribute their 8816 phone number or their +1 phone number. Customer satisfaction will increase as callers are able to avoid the high PSTN termination charges associated with direct dialling.

Due to network structure, data is not available with the +1 Access service. The +1 Access service is currently not available to prepaid subscribers.

Call scenarios
There is no change to subscriber behaviour to receive calls dialled via +1 Access.

The +1 Access subscribers can take advantage of the following call scenarios to better manage their calling costs as well as those of their callers:

  1. PSTN-ISU via 8816: Caller dials Iridium subscriber’s 8816-based number directly and calling party pays standard PSTN rates for a call to Iridium’s 8816 country code. Iridium subscriber incurs no charge for an inbound call. Caller pays typically high PSTN rates.
  2. ISU-ISU via 8816: Caller dials Iridium subscriber’s 8816-based number directly via ISU and calling party pays ISU-ISU rates. Called party incurs no charge for an inbound call. Caller pays ISU-ISU rate
  3. PSTN-ISU via two-stage dialling: Caller dials Iridium subscriber via the Iridium two-stage platform and inputs the Iridium subscriber’s 8816-based number. Caller is charged by their local phone company for a call to a U.S. phone number (1-480-768-2500). Iridium subscriber is billed at two-stage dialling rates. Iridium subscriber incurs a charge for an inbound two-stage call. Calling party incurs a charge (payable to local phone company) for a call to a U.S. phone number.
  4. PSTN-ISU via +1 Access: Caller dials Iridium subscriber directly using their +1-480-xxx-xxxx phone number. Caller is charged by their local phone company for a call to a U.S. phone number. Called party is billed at +1 Access rates. Iridium subscriber incurs a charge for an inbound +1 Access call. Calling party incurs a charge (payable to local phone company) for a call to a U.S. phone number.

Placing calls with a +1 Access-enabled Account has not changed; there is no change to subscriber behaviour to dial outbound calls.

How is +1 Access different from Two-Stage dialling?
The +1 Access allows callers to dial Iridium subscribers directly through their own, unique U.S. phone number. Two-stage dialling access is also available to +1 Access subscribers.

Two-stage dialling required multiple numbers (two-stage access number and called party’s MSISDN) and navigation through English language voice prompts. The +1 Access rates are set at a slight premium to two-stage dialling due to the higher costs associated with the service.

Unlike Two-Stage, the +1 Access numbers are unique per subscriber. PIN protection is not necessary and not supported under the +1 Access service.
