Visual Studies 'helps make sense' of art; Houston best city in Texas to have program, professors say

The new visual studies program is developing classes so that the minor will be ready in spring 2008, but students are already enjoying the available course curriculum. "I love it," studio art junior Joy Moire said. "I'll be sad when it's over."

As of now, grants are still being written to supplement the University's funding of the program, - the first of its kind in Texas.

Students said they are still experiencing parking difficulties after the second week of Lot 19A's closure, even though parking officials said that enough spaces are available on campus.

"I have to come an hour early just to find somebody, track them down, ask them for their spot, wait and then get it," said business sophomore Norris Kwan, who used to park in Lot 19A.

Perhaps if Kristen Griffiths ("Communism: the best answer" Opinion, Monday) wants to live in a society where she has limited money and limited ways to spend it, where personal choice and decision is turned over to someone who knows nothing about her and the government makes all decisions for those both able and inept, she should move to the People's Republic of China.

The UH volleyball team traveled down the road to Rice (8-8, 2-2) on Thursday night and pushed their rival foes to the limit before coming up short (30-26, 24-30, 28-30, 30-17 and 10-15).

The loss was Houston's first in conference play and ended the Cougars (7-8, 3-1 C-USA) season high five-match win streak.

Guests stood up, clapped and sang "This Little Light of Mine," and "Work" during Striking Out for the Deep Water, a presentation by English professor Elizabeth Brown-Guillory.

During her presentation, Brown-Guillory discussed how blues music emerged and the exploration of blues and jazz through the short stories of Ann Petry and James Baldwin.
