"Promise" is unlike any other Ciara single released thus far—sultry and deliberate, the kind of song that grows on you. It is a reinvention record (like what "When I Think Of You" was to Janet Jackson) and thus fitting as the lead single for her sophomore effort, "Ciara: The Evolution." There is no real instrumental intro as Ciara launches straight into come-hither mode: "Come enjoy the night/Baby take a bite," she coos. While the carefully measured tempo sounds incompatible with her whispery cadence, it is also strangely appealing—particularly the changes in melody. Despite some juvenile lyrics, "Promise" finds Ciara on a refreshing new plateau: No 1, 2 steps here. —Clover Hope
