Freedy Friday
It's a tune-packed Friday at Alley Katz with The Ernies, Regan, and legendary songwriter Freedy Johnston.

There's a lot you can do this weekend. Walk circles around Wal-Mart, for example, or play that same staring game with your spouse. You can lie to your friends about having something fun to do, or you could take a giant leap, fly by the seat of your pants sort-of-speak, and actually do something. If you're willing to take that risk, we're here to help. Let's talk music.

Friday night is a triple-header at Alley Katz, with The Ernies playing an early, all-ages show from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The Ernies are popular with the college crowd in Richmond. The River City natives used to have a ska sound, but in the past couple of years, their music has morphed into more of a heavy rock, hip-hop mix. Their sound is upbeat and infused with lots of horns remnant of the ska days, making them a fun band to see live.

Even if you pass on the early show, you can still set your Friday night to music. Alley Katz will host a second show with local acoustic-rock artist Regan performing at 10 p.m. That show will cool the place down and set the tone for the late-show treat, Kansas-native Freedy Johnston. A true storyteller, Johnston sings simple melodies that shine light on the darker areas of life. In 1998, Rolling Stone named Johnston songwriter of the year. Heís worked with the top names in rock from Elvis Costello to the Counting Crows to Los Lobos.

Donít think going to Alley Katz will be the typical bar scene, either. The atmosphere at Alley Katz will be relaxed, says Heidi Paul-Gonzales, the club's owner. Tables and chairs will be set up for the show, so it won't be the usual, no-elbow-room bar crunch.
