Blue Line Boost for the Steelers

Matsos Gets His Man as Dagenais Signs

Defence wins championships is a message that coach Dave Matsos has preached since arriving in Sheffield and this morning the Steelers coach took one giant leap in improving his blue line with the signing of 6’ 200lb Canadian Randy Dagenais.

”We talked about bringing in some quality and this guys is just that” said Matsos “Randy is a terrific all around good defenseman, he knows how to look after his own end, hits hard but also skates so very well and makes things happen offensively”

Dagenais spent the last 2 seasons with Riten Renon in Italy and could have returned to various teams on the continent “I had options back in Italy and elsewhere but after speaking with Dave and then doing my homework on the club the whole Steelers thing excited me. I have friends that play in the UK and they said if Sheffield want you then sign.

”I’m coming here to win a championship and the coach tells me we will have a championship winning side. Dave then also told me about the possibility of combining playing with obtaining my Masters Degree at the University of Sheffield and that added to the deal for me”

Matsos was keen on finding a defenseman to co-ordinate his power play and believes Dagenais is the right man “This guy has run power plays all his playing life, he moves the puck well and is mobile” Dagenais agrees “I think I quarter back the power play well, I make good decisions, pass the puck well, my first pass is a good one”

Another reason for coming to Britain was the North American style game “I like the idea of a bit more contact, I like the idea of a North American game on the European big ice. I skate well and that will help me, I like to make nice plays and I think this is a great place for me right now”
