Steelers New Signing is Steve Munn

Matty's Happy
Sheffield coach David Matsos has confirmed the signing of 29 year old defenseman Steve Munn

Munn has played the last 2 years in the American Hockey League with Norfolk Admirals, this after winning two ECHL Championships with Atlantic City and Trenton Titans in 2002/03 and 2004/05. The 6'2" 205lb defenseman will also become the first Steeler to take advantage of the club's association with the University of Sheffield, and he will undertake a 2-year MBA course during his multi year contract.

Coach David Matsos said "this is a player the likes we haven't had here in Sheffield for a while, he is a big strong leader who will take care of his defensive duties first and foremost, he is tough no nonsense type player who will clear players away from the net, look after his team mates when necessary and also be a leader in the room. He is a big man with a big job here.

"Steve has been a Captain, he has won two championships and I expect him to be a big leader on the team and have a strong influence around the club and inside the locker room. For the club to be able to sign a player like Steve right out of the AHL we have needed the assistance of the University of Sheffield who have gone to great lengths to assist us finding the right and suitable education package for Steve. We have been able to offer Steve a lot more than a playing contract, during his 2 years with us he will be able to continue his education and obtain his MBA"

Munn, speaking from his home in Canada said "This is a great opportunity for me, Sheffield and other clubs made offers to me but Sheffield came up with a great package that enables me to play and take my education further. Everyone I spoke to to at the club couldn't have been more helpful and when I did my home work on the Steelers I couldn't find anyone with anything bad to say about the organisation. This is an exciting challenge for me, I want to continue playing and continue winning and after speaking with David Matsos I was excited about the future of this team. I Can't wait to get over and start playing

Steve Munn described him self as a stay at home defenseman "I like to look after my own end first and foremost" he said "I am a physical player and like to cause a bit of chaos from time to time, if needs must then I also look after my team mates and I am not afraid to step in and take responsability. I am a winner, a proven winner. I have won championships, I know what it takes to win and I think that was something that David Matsos wanted from his players this year"
