Steelers Change their Import Line Up

UNISON Sheffield Steelers have today confirmed that they have released forward Brett Clouthier with immediate effect. Clouthier had been with the club since the start of the season after playing 6 years professionally in North America.

Steelers Coach David Matsos has moved quickly in signing 26 year old forward Ryan Finnerty who has been playing with SV Kaltern in Italy this season. Finnerty turned pro in 2001 with Peoria Rivermen where he spent two seasons before moving to San Angelo Saints in 2003-04. After another season with Victoria Salmon Kings Finnerty played last season with the South Carolina Stingrays before the move to Italy.

Matsos explained his decision “this was a very tough decision, Brett had done a very good job for us, but with the import rule changes, zero tolerance and a like Brett was finding it hard to play his regular game where he would fight and intimidate. Clouthier is so tough that he couldn’t buy a fight in this league.

”I felt that we needed some more depth in our forward lines, a player who could play 25-30 minutes a game and contribute on the scoreboard. I believe that Ryan Finnerty will do that. Ryan will bring intensity, raise energy levels and will be able to add that quality up front.

”My reports on Ryan suggest he will be a very good skater, and all his previous coaches have confirmed what an outstanding penalty killer he is. This was a tough decision letting Brett go, but, my number priority as coach of the Steelers is to ensure that I make the team as good as I can do, if I have the possibility of making us better then I have to do just that”

Ryan Finnerty said, “This is a great opportunity to me, I wasn’t enjoying Italy and was thinking of moving back home when Sheffield showed interest, they encouraged me that Sheffield was a great place to play. David Matsos and the management certainly did everything they could to help me from my current team

”When I looked at the Steelers roster I realised what a good group of players they had there, I know most of them from playing against them back home. The team have certainly turned things around in recent games and I see this is a big chance for me to come to the UK and make a mark

”I am full of enthusiasm and just can’t wait to step on to home ice on Saturday evening
