September 26, 2005

(M.I.A., September 26, 2005)

> Leah: WELCOME BACK TO "MuchOnDemand!" OKAY. M.I.A. IS IN THE HOUSE. SO, M.I.A., COME ON DOWN! (Cheering and applause)

> MY GOD! LOUD.

> Leah: HOW ARE YOU?

> THEY'RE LOUD.

> Leah: THANK YOU SO MUCH. WE'RE GOING TO STAND OVER HERE. HOW ARE YOU DOING?

> I'M GOOD.

> Leah: IT'S A PLEASURE TO MEET YOU.

> YOU, TOO.

> Leah: THANK YOU SO MUCH. YOU HAVE SOME DIEHARD FANS HERE IN CANADA.

> I KNOW. THEY'RE PROBABLY DOING ALL THE SCREAMING.

> Leah: THEY LOVE IT. NOW, THE ALBUM, "ARULAR"-- (Cheering and applause)

> Leah: I WANT TO SAY, THERE IS NOTHING ELSE OUT LIKE THIS, AND I MEAN IT. HONESTLY, IF YOU HAVEN'T HEARD IT, UNBELIEVABLE. IT'S A REALLY ODD THING TO SAY IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY NOWADAYS BECAUSE EVERYTHING SOUNDS THE SAME.

> YOU TO SAY THAT--

> Leah: AND YOU'VE STARTED YOUR OWN-- ARE YOU OKAY? WHAT'S GOING ON UNDER THERE?

> MY BOYFRIEND JUST GAVE ME THIS T-SHIRT.

> Leah: SAME SAME.

> YEAH.

> Leah: IT'S SO TRUE, THOUGH.

> BUT DIFFERENT ON THE BACK.

> Leah: BUT DIFFERENT? SAME BUT DIFFERENT. I LIKE THAT. BUT IT'S TRUE. AS I SAID, NOTHING ELSE IS OUT THERE LIKE THIS. SO HOW WAS IT FOR YOU IN THE BEGINNING OF YOUR CAREER, THOUGH, BECAUSE I HEARD A LOT OF PEOPLE SAID THAT YOUR MUSIC WOULDN'T FIT INTO TELEVISION OR RADIO. SO HOW DID YOU STAY TRUE TO YOURSELF AS AN ARTIST AND KEEP WHAT YOU FELT WAS YOUR MUSIC OR STYLE?

> I THINK I JUST KIND OF THOUGHT ABOUT ALL THE ARTISTS THAT I REALLY RESPECTED THROUGHOUT THE-- JUST ANY GENRE OF MUSIC REALLY AND I THINK EVERYBODY THAT I REALLY RESPECTED AND LIKED, THEY WERE JUST THEM. YOU KNOW, THEY'RE PEOPLE WHO ALWAYS STUCK TO WHO THEY WERE AND WERE TRUE AND HONEST ABOUT WHO THEY WERE. SO I THINK THAT KIND OF GAVE ME A REAL LIKE CONFIDENCE TO JUST STICK AT IT. YOU KNOW, JUST THINKING ABOUT PEOPLE LIKE BJORK-- YOU KNOW, I DON'T KNOW, BOB DYLAN. YOU KNOW, JUST ARTISTS THAT TRULY WERE, YOU KNOW, STRONG IN THEMSELVES. EVENTUALLY, YOU KIND OF-- YOU MAKE IT A PART, YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN?

> Leah: UH-HUH.

> SO THAT'S KIND OF REALLY WHAT HAPPENED. (Cheering and applause)

> Leah: IT'S-- LIKE YOU SAID, IT'S ABOUT FORGING YOUR OWN PATH, RIGHT?

> YES. I MEAN, THAT'S KIND OF WHY I CALLED "ARULAR" ANYWAY BECAUSE IT WAS JUST-- I THOUGHT THAT IT SHOULD BE A GOOD OMEN TO CALL IT "ARULAR." SO IF IT IS A PATH LESS TRODDEN, IT WAS KIND OF WISHING IT GOOD LUCK. YOU KNOW, BECAUSE IT WOULD BE REALLY DIFFICULT TO DO SOMETHING.

> Leah: ABSOLUTELY. AND IT WORKED OUT BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE SAYING THAT YOU'RE THE HOTTEST NEW HIP-HOP ARTIST. YOU MUST BE EXCITED... (Cheering and applause)

> Leah: THEY'RE LOVIN' IT. THIS GUY'S DIEHARD.

> YOU MADE ME REALLY SHY NOW.

> Leah: "BLENDER" MAGAZINE HAS YOU IN THEIR HOT 100.

> YES.

> Leah: SO WHAT DOES THAT FEEL LIKE FOR YOU NOW THAT YOU'RE GETTING RECOGNITION WITH THE PRESS? DOES IT MEAN SOMETHING TO YOU OR DO YOU NOT REALLY CARE OR JUST CARE ABOUT YOUR MUSIC?

> PERSONALLY, I TRY NOT TO THINK ABOUT IT TOO MUCH. BUT I THINK IT'S GREAT FOR BEING A TAMIL, SRI LANKAN, WHATEVER. (Applause and cheering) YOU KNOW, IT MATTERS TO THEM, YOU KNOW. IT'S KIND OF GOOD TO REPRESENT AND STUFF, BEING A CHICK, YOU KNOW, THROUGH MUSIC, THAT'S REALLY... BUT YEAH, THE LEARNING CURVE IS STRAIGHT UP, SO I'VE JUST TRIED TO STAY FOCUSED ON NOT LOSING THAT THING, YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN? OR GETTING TOO DISTRACTED OR OVERWHELMED BY THE WHOLE EXPERIENCE.

> Leah: THAT'S GOING ON AROUND YOU.

> YEAH.

> Leah: I READ THIS GREAT QUOTE THAT I LIKE. IT SAYS "IT'S NICE TO HEAR FROM SOMEONE WHO KNOWS ABOUT REVOLUTION AND PEACE FIRSTHAND RATHER THAN A FAUX PUNK, FAUX RADICAL BAND." I THINK THAT'S PRETTY STRONG, THOUGH. NOT ONLY IS THE SOUND OF YOUR MUSIC GREAT, BUT YOU HAVE THE LYRICS TO BACK YOU UP. YOU KNOW, SOMETIMES WHEN YOU HEAR REALLY GREAT MUSIC THAT PULLS YOU IN BUT THEN THE MUSIC MEANS NOTHING. THEY COULD SAY THE SAME THING OVER AND OVER AND OVER, BUT YOU HAVE STORIES BEHIND YOUR SONGS.

> YEAH, I MEAN, I THINK COMING TO CANADA-- LIKE CANADA SEEMS TO BE ONE OF THOSE COUNTRIES THAT ACTUALLY MAKES AN ARENA WHERE SOMEONE LIKE ME CAN COME UP AND ACTUALLY BE MORE THAN ONE THING. DO YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN? I DON'T KNOW. I ALWAYS FEEL LIKE IN CERTAIN PLACES YOU CAN'T REALLY BE LIKE THAT. LIKE, YOU KNOW, IN ENGLAND I THINK IT'S A LOT MORE DIFFICULT TO BE MORE THAN JUST A BAND, YOU KNOW? AND I THINK IT'S REALLY NICE TO COME HERE AND BE KNOWN FOR THAT WHATEVER YOUR EXPERIENCES WERE AND WHAT ACTUALLY, YOU KNOW, LIKE YOU WANT TO TALK ABOUT AND LETTING PEOPLE DO, YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN?

> Leah: BECAUSE IT MAKES YOU WHO YOU ARE, THOUGH.

> PEOPLE ARE JUST A LOT MORE TOLERANT HERE AND YOU CAN REALLY SEE IT. YOU KNOW, AS AN ARTIST, WHEN I COME TO CANADA, IT JUST SEEMS LIKE THERE'S-- I AM NOT EMBARRASSED ABOUT BEING ABOUT POLITICS OR TALKING ABOUT MY EXPERIENCES OR COMING FROM SRI LANKA OR BEING ABOUT ART SCHOOL; YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN?

> Leah: UH-HUH.

> SO I THINK THAT'S BEEN REALLY LIKE ENCOURAGING, WHEN I COME OUT AND DO SHOWS AND MEET MY FANS... (Cheering and applause)

> Leah: THAT'S GREAT.

> MY BOYFRIEND'S OUT THERE.

> Leah: NO, HE'S NOT! WHERE? WHAT ONE? IS HE THE ONE JUMPING UP?

> YEAH, YEAH.

> Leah: (Laughing) THAT'S TRUE LOVE, MAN. HE'S JUMPING UP OUTSIDE. HE SHOULD COME IN. WE'LL HAVE HIM COME IN DURING THE VIDEO. COME IN! HE'LL COME INSIDE. WE'RE GOING TO CHECK OUT YOUR VIDEO RIGHT NOW. MORE WITH M.I.A. AFTER THIS. (Cheering and applause) (Playing video)

> Leah: STILL HANGING OUT WITH M.I.A.! (Cheering and applause)

> THANK YOU.

> Leah: IS THAT IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO--

> I TONE MYSELF DOWN, YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN? ...YOU'RE BLINDING ME.

> Leah: COME ON.

> IT'S BEEN RAINING, SO I THOUGHT I'D REFLECT THAT.

> Leah: BUT IS THAT IMPORTANT FOR YOU AS AN ARTIST, TO HAVE YOUR HAND DIPPED IN LIKE ALL ART FORMS, NOT JUST MUSIC, LIKE WHETHER IT BE--

> YEAH, I THINK I ALWAYS FEEL MYSELF AS AN ARTIST, YOU KNOW, BUT LIKE WHAT YOU DO TO EXPRESS YOURSELF THROUGH THAT IS LIKE THE MEDIAN. THAT'S THE TOOL. I THINK YOU AS AN ARTIST, YOU ALWAYS HAVE TO GO-- YOU COME FIRST AND WHAT THAT THING IS. BUT ONCE YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR VIBE IS, YOU CAN USE WHATEVER MEDIUM TO EXPRESS THAT. SO I JUST KIND OF ALWAYS STAY REALLY OPEN-MINDED ABOUT WHAT-- WHAT I WOULD END UP DOING, YOU KNOW. SO, YOU KNOW, WHETHER I WAS MAKING LIKE A CURRY OR, YOU KNOW, MAKING A PICTURE OR MAKING A SONG, IT'S ALWAYS THE SAME.

> Leah: WE'RE GOING TO TAKE A LOOK. WE ACTUALLY HAVE SOME OF YOUR ARTWORK. CAN WE LOOK AT THE SCREEN? THIS IS FROM YOUR WEB SITE. IT'S BEAUTIFUL STUFF. HOW DO YOU DO THAT? IS IT ON A COMPUTER?

> THAT'S LIKE ON A STENCIL.

> Leah: YEAH?

> YEAH, BASICALLY THAT'S LIKE A MIXTURE OF STUFF. THAT'S NOT REALLY A STENCIL. I'M WAITING FOR IT TO-- THE STENCIL STUFF REALLY KIND OF TOOK OFF, AND THEN I GOT NOMINATED FOR THE ALTERNATIVE ETERNA PRIZE AND STUFF LIKE THAT AND IT BECAME A BOOK.

> Leah: YOU DEVELOPED THE COVER OF THE ALBUM AND THE INSIDE?

> YEAH, YEAH. I DID A VIDEO FOR THEM AND THAT WAS MY FIRST JOB.

> Leah: IT'S CRAZY HOW EVERYTHING FALLS INTO PLACE. THAT BRINGS YOU TO WHERE YOU ARE RIGHT NOW, RIGHT?

> YEAH. (Cheering and applause)

> Leah: IT'S AMAZING.

> JUST STAY OPEN.

> Leah: AND YOU'RE CURRENTLY ON TOUR. HOW'S THAT GOING?

> I'VE BEEN ON TOUR SINCE MARCH, SO I'VE BEEN ON THE ROAD. IT'S GOING REALLY GOOD. I THINK-- I HAD A SHOW IN-- ABOUT TO HAVE A SHOW TONIGHT IN TORONTO. (Cheering and applause)

> BUT I'VE DONE SO MANY SHOWS HERE ALREADY. BUT IT'S GOOD. YOU KNOW, IT'S NICE COMING OUT AND ACTUALLY MEETING ALL YOUR FANS AND, YOU KNOW, LIKE-- YOU MAKE THIS THING IN YOUR BEDROOM AND YOU DON'T KNOW REALLY WHO IS GOING TO GET IT OR RELATE TO IT OR ANYTHING, YOU KNOW? AND YOU JUST POUR YOUR HEART OUT KIND OF THING, AND THEN YOU FIND OUT THAT YOU RELATE TO PEOPLE AND THAT'S THE FINAL PROCESS OF IT, YOU KNOW, TO MEET A PEOPLE WHO ARE ACTUALLY LIKE YOU AND THAT YOU CONNECT, YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN? THAT'S KIND OF COOL. THAT'S THE BEST THING ABOUT TOURING.

> Leah: IT'S FUNNY. I DON'T KNOW IF THIS IS A TRUE QUOTE BUT YOU SAID TOURING SUCKS FOR GIRLS; IT'S BETTER FOR BOYS BECAUSE BOYS, THEY DON'T SHOWER FOR TWO WEEKS AND THEY CAN GET AWAY WITH IT. IS THAT TRUE?

> YEAH, I THINK FOR A GIRL, YOU HAVE TO SPEND A LITTLE BIT MORE MONEY AND GET THE, YOU KNOW, CREATURE COMFORTS, BE ABLE TO GET HOT WATER, WASH YOUR HAIR, SO...

> Leah: BUT YOU LOOK GOOD, RIGHT? SHE LOOKS GOOD. (Cheering and applause)

> I DON'T CARE ANY MORE. I'VE GONE BEYOND THE POINT OF CARING, YOU KNOW?

> Leah: NOW, IS TRUE THAT YOUR NEXT ALBUM WILL BE PRODUCED BY TIMBERLAND?

> NOT THE WHOLE ALBUM.

> Leah: CERTAIN TRACKS?

> YEAH, I THINK I'M GOING TO TRY SOME STUFF OUT WITH HIM AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS.

> Leah: VERY COOL. DO YOU KNOW WHEN WE CAN EXPECT THAT TO COME? DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA?

> NO. IT'S JUST KIND OF LIKE A MUTUAL FEELING. I READ IN A MAGAZINE HE REALLY WANTS TO WORK WITH ME, AND I WANTED TO WORK WITH HIM. IT'S BEEN, LIKE, ONE DAY IT WILL HAPPEN. AS SOON AS I GET OFF THE TOUR BUS, THAT'S WHAT I REALLY WANT TO DO SO...

> Leah: VERY GOOD. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR COMING BY.

> THANKS FOR HAVING ME.

> Leah: MAKE SURE YOU GO GET M.I.A.'S ALBUM "ARULAR," OUT IN STORES NOW! THANKS AGAIN. (Cheering and applause) ("MuchOnDemand" theme)
