Multi-talented scrumhalf Luke Burgess was lured to Sydney in mid-2007 after a frustrating four seasons in the Brumbies program. Despite being ranked number three behind both George Gregan and Patrick Phibbs, Burgess was named in the Wallaby Tri-Nations train-on squad in 2006 after just two appearances at Super 14 level.

Born in Newcastle on August 20, 1983, Burgess is a product of the renowned Rugby program at Sydney’s St. Joseph’s College.

Burgess began his club career with a colts premiership with Sydney University in 2003, a performance that saw him lured to Canberra prior to the start of the following season. He represented Australia at U21 level that same year.

It wasn’t until he switched to the Eastern Suburbs club that his first grade career flourished. He featured strongly in the race for the 2006 Ken Catchpole Medal, leading the vote until a foot injury sidelined him mid-season. The injury also robbed him of the opportunity to play for Australia A in its 2006 series against Fiji.

Burgess joined the HSBC Waratahs in May 2007 after agreeing to a two year deal. A foundation member of the Melbourne Rebels in the Mazda Australian Rugby Championship, he will go head to head with resident scrumhalves Josh Valentine and Brett Sheehan in 2008.
