Welcome to the Press

The West Virginia Press was established in the 1960s under the administration of the University’s library as a not-for-profit scholarly publisher at West Virginia University . Almost immediately, we became a major source for information about the coal-mining industry and the history of the state.

The WVU Press moved into the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at West Virginia University in 1999 and has since been revived into a dynamic publisher of many significant titles. Of course, we still publish works of high quality for scholars, students, and the citizens of the state and beyond as we did during our early days. Our headquarters are in Morgantown , and we market and distribute our books worldwide. With a local staff of six people, we bring out about a dozen books each year, as well as four journals.

If you've had a chance to look through our seasonal catalogs, which come out in the spring and fall of each year, you know that we are especially strong in certain key areas. These include West Virginia studies, especially West Virginia history; American art; Appalachian music, fiction, and poetry; early medieval studies; and natural history.
